A 4-year-old child tragically lost their life in an accidental shooting in Alexandria, Louisiana, on May 9. According to the Alexandria Police Department (APD), officers were called to a local hospital at around 10:45 p.m. after receiving reports that the child had died from a gunshot wound.
The Incident
The incident occurred in the 3000 block of Houston Street after a birthday party, where two 4-year-old children were reportedly playing with a gun. During their play, the firearm accidentally discharged, striking one of the children fatally. Officers later determined that the weapon involved in the shooting was stolen.
APD Chief’s Statement
Alexandria Police Chief Chad Gremillion expressed his sorrow and called the incident a preventable tragedy. “A child has lost their life in a preventable tragedy.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a devastating reminder of the importance of properly securing firearms and keeping them out of reach of children,” Gremillion said in a statement. He urged gun owners to store their firearms responsibly—unloaded, locked away, and inaccessible to children.
Ongoing Investigation
APD has contacted the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and is collaborating with them as part of the ongoing investigation. The police department has urged anyone with information related to the incident to contact APD at (318) 441-6416.
