A heartbreaking child abuse case in Oklahoma has led to the arrests of a mother and her boyfriend after a 9-year-old boy died from injuries authorities say were consistent with long-term abuse. Investigators also discovered signs of abuse involving other children living in the home.
Oklahoma Mother And Boyfriend Arrested After Child’s Death
According to the Oklahoma City Police Department, Alicia Busey and Steven Duty were arrested following the death of 9-year-old Ruger Boude.
Authorities said Ruger was taken to the hospital on April 8 with severe injuries that immediately raised concerns among medical staff.
Hospital workers later contacted police after doctors determined the child’s injuries appeared to be linked to abuse.
Ruger died two days after being admitted to the hospital, and officials later ruled his death a homicide.
Doctors Found Severe Injuries During Treatment
According to court documents, doctors discovered Ruger had suffered a collapsed lung and a major brain bleed while undergoing emergency treatment.
Medical staff also reportedly found multiple injuries across his body during examinations.
Investigators said an autopsy later revealed:
- Bruises in different stages of healing
- A broken wrist
- BB pellets embedded in soft tissue and organs
- Signs of long-term physical abuse
Police said the extent of the injuries suggested the abuse had been happening over a long period of time.
Other Children Also Showed Signs Of Abuse
Authorities also examined other children living in the home after Ruger’s death.
According to investigators, doctors discovered that those children also had BB pellets embedded in their bodies along with multiple fractures in various stages of healing.
Medical experts reportedly told investigators the injuries strongly indicated ongoing abuse inside the household.
The findings led to additional concerns about the safety and treatment of the children in the home.
Mother Allegedly Blamed Older Sibling
Court records stated that during questioning, Alicia Busey allegedly claimed Ruger’s injuries were caused during a fight with an older brother.
However, investigators reportedly determined the injuries were too severe and widespread to match that explanation.
Police later arrested both Busey and Steven Duty on charges connected to Ruger’s death.
Victim Remembered As Loving And Energetic
Ruger Boude’s obituary described him as energetic, loving, and deeply caring toward others.
Loved ones remembered him as a child who taught people around him empathy and kindness.
Family members also described him as a helpful young boy who loved being close to his mother and family.
The heartbreaking details of the case have sparked anger and sadness online as many people mourn the loss of the child.
Couple Facing Serious Charges
Authorities charged both Alicia Busey and Steven Duty with:
- Second-degree murder
- Child abuse
According to reports, bond for each defendant was set at $5 million.
Preliminary court hearings are expected to take place later this month as the investigation continues.
Case Sparks Child Safety Concerns
The disturbing allegations have renewed conversations about child protection and the importance of identifying abuse early.
Experts often urge teachers, medical workers, neighbours, and relatives to report suspicious injuries or behavioural signs involving children as quickly as possible.
