A heartwarming story out of Louisiana has captured the attention of the Acadiana community after a young girl, who is autistic, reached out to the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Department for help when she felt upset. The incident, which occurred on Mother’s Day, highlights the importance of teaching children how to seek help when they’re in need and the positive response from law enforcement officers.
Autistic Girl Texts Police for Help on Mother’s Day
Amy Luquette Fredrick shared the touching story on her Facebook page, recounting how her daughter, Roo, took action after her plans to visit her grandmother fell through. According to Amy, when Roo was told that they wouldn’t be able to visit her grandmother and that it was time to exit the car, she became distressed.
As a child with autism, Roo had been taught to reach out to the police if she was ever in trouble or needed assistance. And that’s exactly what she did. When Amy wasn’t looking, Roo sent a text to the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Department explaining the situation.
Amy had no idea that Roo had texted the authorities until a deputy arrived at their home and explained why they were there.
Deputy Responds with Understanding and Compassion
The deputy who arrived at the scene, Deputy D’Angelo, was not only professional but also empathetic. Amy shared that the deputy had a family member who is also autistic, which allowed him to understand the situation better. Amy invited Deputy D’Angelo into their home to reassure him that Roo was fine, and after a quick check, he confirmed that everything was okay.
But the kindness didn’t stop there. Deputy D’Angelo invited Roo to sit in his patrol unit and even let her try on his protective vest, which brought a smile to the young girl’s face. It was a small, yet special moment that brought joy to both Roo and the deputy.
A Lesson in Safety and a Heartwarming Moment
While Amy says that she has now removed text apps from Roo’s phone to prevent similar situations in the future, the story has resonated with many as an example of how law enforcement can make a positive impact on a child’s life. Amy’s Mother’s Day experience with Roo, while unexpected, will be a memory she’ll cherish forever.
The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office shared the story on their official Facebook page, using it as an opportunity to remind parents that it’s essential to teach children that law enforcement officers are there to help, especially when they feel scared or unsure.
This story has touched hearts in Acadiana, showcasing the importance of community, understanding, and how small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
