In Ohio, drivers aged 65 and older must renew their driver’s license every four years—in person—and complete a vision screening. Seniors cannot choose the eight-year renewal option available to younger drivers, but they do not face a mandatory road test or written exam just because of their age.
Renewal Frequency and Eligibility
Ohio law states that any license issued to a driver age 65 or over expires in four years. This means older adults are limited to four-year renewals and cannot apply for the eight-year license that some adults aged 21–64 can obtain.
If a senior’s license is current or expired less than six months, they can renew at any Ohio deputy registrar license agency. If the license has been expired more than six months, the driver must obtain a temporary permit and pass both the knowledge and driving tests before a new license is issued.
Vision Screening Requirement
All drivers renewing in person must pass a vision screening, and this applies to seniors as well. The minimum standard for an unrestricted Ohio driver’s license is:
If a senior’s vision does not meet these standards, the BMV may issue restrictions (such as requiring glasses) or require further evaluation. There is no separate, senior-only eye test beyond this standard screening.
Documents You’ll Need
To renew in person, seniors should bring their current Ohio driver’s license if possible. If the license is not presented, the BMV requires proof of:
- Full legal name
- Date of birth
- Social Security number (if assigned)
- Ohio residency
- Citizenship or legal presence
Seniors can choose between a Compliant Card (REAL ID) or a Standard Card. The Compliant Card is required for domestic air travel starting May 7, 2025, and needs additional identity documents. The Standard Card is simpler but cannot be used for federal ID purposes.
Fees and Payment
The current fee for a four-year Ohio driver’s license renewal is $30.25, which includes the deputy registrar service fee. Since seniors are only eligible for four-year renewals, this is the amount most older drivers will pay. The eight-year renewal costs $59.40, but it is not available to drivers 65 and older.
The BMV accepts cash, check, and credit or debit cards at deputy registrar offices.
Online and Mail Renewal Limitations
Online renewal is available for many Ohio drivers, but drivers aged 65 and older are not permitted to use the BMV’s online renewal functions. Seniors must renew in person at a deputy registrar agency.
Out-of-state renewal by mail is possible in limited cases (for example, military members or those temporarily outside Ohio), but seniors generally must visit an Ohio office to complete the required vision screening and identity verification.
What This Means for Older Drivers
Ohio’s senior renewal rules are straightforward: renew every four years, visit a deputy registrar office, pass the vision test, and bring the right documents. There is no age cap on driving, and no mandatory road test solely due to age. However, if a senior’s vision, medical condition, or driving record raises concerns, the BMV may require additional review or restrictions.
