A heartbreaking child neglect case in Florida has ended with a healthcare company owner receiving prison time after a disabled 7-year-old boy reportedly starved to death while hundreds of unopened feeding formula bottles remained untouched inside his home.

Nearly three years later, 49-year-old Mirlande Moltimer has pleaded guilty to several state and federal charges connected to the death of young Deonte Atwell. Florida Healthcare Owner Pleads Guilty In Child Death Case
According to prosecutors, Mirlande Moltimer, who owned Samaritin Home Health Care in Florida, admitted guilt in both state and federal court cases connected to Deonte Atwell’s death. She pleaded guilty to third-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter of a child, child neglect, and Medicaid provider fraud.
The plea agreement combined both the state and federal investigations tied to the tragic case. Authorities said the situation involved not only severe neglect but also a scheme to fraudulently bill Medicaid for healthcare services that were reportedly never provided.
Deonte Needed Constant Medical Care To Survive
Investigators explained that Deonte Atwell was born with serious medical conditions, including thoracic spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Because of his health problems, he required constant skilled nursing care, along with a feeding tube and breathing support, simply to survive.
According to prosecutors, the child depended entirely on adults and medical workers for his daily care. However, authorities believe the proper treatment and supervision he desperately needed were not being provided inside the home.
Investigators Discovered Horrific Conditions
Emergency responders arrived at the Fort Lauderdale home on Christmas Day 2023 after receiving a 911 call reporting respiratory distress. But once authorities entered the home, they quickly realised they were dealing with something far more disturbing.
Investigators later stated that Deonte appeared severely malnourished and may have already been dead for some time before emergency services were contacted. Prosecutors described horrifying injuries and said the child’s bones were protruding through wounds in his skin because of extreme starvation and neglect.

Hundreds Of Formula Bottles Were Found Unused
One of the most shocking discoveries in the investigation came after authorities searched the home following the child’s death. Prosecutors said investigators found 264 unopened bottles of feeding formula inside the residence.

As part of the plea agreement, a judge ordered Mirlande Moltimer to serve 20 months in state prison followed immediately by 16 months in federal prison. After completing both sentences, she will also spend seven years on probation and must pay more than $25,000 in restitution.
