A heartbreaking case in Texas has shocked the local community after two young children were found dead inside a burned vehicle in San Antonio.
Authorities say a 34-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with capital murder and arson following the tragic incident. Investigators are still trying to understand what led to the deaths of the children, who were believed to be just 5 and 7 years old.
Texas Woman Arrested After Children Found Dead in Burned Car
Police identified the accused as Marlene Vidal, 34. She now faces:
- Two counts of capital murder of a child under 10 years old
- One count of arson
The incident happened early Friday morning in a warehouse parking lot on Richland Hills Drive in San Antonio, Texas.
According to authorities, a witness walking a dog around 5 a.m. noticed a white Hyundai on fire and immediately called 911.
The witness reportedly spoke to a woman at the scene who claimed she had already contacted emergency services.
Children Found Inside Burned Vehicle
San Antonio police officers and firefighters arrived shortly after the emergency call and managed to extinguish the burning vehicle.
While inspecting the car, investigators discovered the bodies of two young children inside.
Authorities later described the victims as a 7-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy. Police said the little boy was autistic and nonverbal.
Officials are still working to formally identify the children.
Police Say Evidence Points to the Mother
Investigators quickly identified Marlene Vidal as a suspect and arrested her soon after the incident.
According to Assistant San Antonio Police Chief Jesus Salame Jr., surveillance footage, statements made by Vidal, and evidence collected at the scene indicate she was solely responsible for the children’s deaths.
Police also said Vidal has family connections in San Antonio but is originally from Edinburg, Texas, located in the Rio Grande Valley.
Authorities revealed that Vidal allegedly made comments suggesting she was the person officers should be looking for during the investigation.
Father Speaks Out After Tragedy
Local reports stated that the children’s father, who no longer lived with Vidal, spoke publicly after learning about the deaths.
He reportedly confirmed that the young boy had autism and said he was devastated by the tragedy.
The heartbreaking case has deeply affected both family members and the local community.
Mental Health May Have Played a Role
Investigators have not yet confirmed a motive behind the deaths.
However, police stated that mental health issues may have been a factor in the case.
Assistant Chief Salame told reporters that investigators are continuing to search for answers while supporting everyone affected by the tragedy.
He acknowledged that understanding “why” incidents like this happen can often be the most difficult part of an investigation.
Defendant Appeared in Court
Marlene Vidal was officially booked into the Bexar County Jail late Friday evening.
During her court appearance and arraignment, reports say Vidal became emotional and cried after hearing the murder charges read aloud. She also reportedly asked the judge when her trial would begin.
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue speaking with relatives and other individuals connected to the case.
