A 45-year-old Ohio man has pleaded guilty to killing an 81-year-old man after doing yard work for him and then burying his body in a wooded area, authorities said.

Man Pleads Guilty to Murder in Ohio

John Thomas Scott admitted last week to murder, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence in the death of Gary Franke, a Lancaster resident located about 30 miles southeast of Columbus. A judge will sentence Scott to between 18 years to life in prison at a later date.

Details of the Crime

According to a probable cause affidavit reviewed by Law&Crime, Lancaster police responded to a missing person report on the morning of August 9 at Franke’s home on South Maple Street. Officers found Franke dead in a wooded area on the property, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Detectives later learned that Scott had done yard work for Franke the previous day. Afterward, Scott decided to rob Franke and killed him during the process. He left the scene, then returned with his girlfriend, Holly McDaniel, and together they buried the victim’s body.

Arrest and Charges

Scott and McDaniel were arrested the day after the murder. McDaniel faces charges of tampering with evidence and obstructing justice. Her case is still ongoing.

About the Victim, Gary Franke

Franke was a beloved member of his community, known for helping others and giving to charity. He often allowed neighborhood kids to ride on his golf cart and assisted people trying to get back on their feet.

“He would try to get them started back in their life, their credit right, get them started and going again,” neighbor Troy Seiple told WBNS. “He was really proud about that.”

Franke’s obituary highlighted his generosity:

“Known for his kindness and generosity, Gary often bought meals for those in need and provided them with work on his real estate properties. He believed deeply in second chances, even when they came with risk. Gary felt that everyone deserved the opportunity to turn their life around.”

Police said Franke had known Scott for over 30 years.

Next Steps in the Case

A sentencing date for John Thomas Scott has not yet been scheduled. Authorities continue to monitor the case closely as it moves toward court proceedings.
