A tragic shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego left three people dead on May 18, 2026. Authorities are investigating the incident as a potential hate crime.
Details of the Shooting
The attack occurred around 12:00 p.m. local time at the mosque on Eckstrom Avenue. Police later confirmed that the threat had been “neutralized.” Two alleged shooters, aged 17 and 18, were found dead in a vehicle several blocks away from the mosque. Officials say the deaths appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said the incident involved hate rhetoric and is being treated as a hate crime. One of the suspects’ mothers contacted authorities shortly before the attack, reporting her son and multiple weapons missing around 9:42 a.m.
Community and Mosque Response
The Islamic Center of San Diego announced it would remain closed until further notice. In a statement, the mosque called the day “extremely painful and traumatic” and said counseling services would be provided to community members. They also requested that the media and public avoid speculation while the investigation continues.
“Places of worship are meant to be spaces of peace, prayer, reflection, and community. Violence and hatred have no place in our society,” the mosque said.
City Officials Speak Out
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria condemned the attack, stating, “Today, our city was shaken by a violent act of hate at the Islamic Center of San Diego, and my heart is with every person touched by this tragedy. No one in our city should ever have to fear for their safety in a house of faith and a place of learning.”
Authorities continue to investigate the motive and circumstances of the shooting.
