She, along with her two young children, was reportedly killed by her husband in an apparent murder-suicide. Tragic Murder-Suicide in Houston Family
The Houston Police Department (HPD) confirmed that the bodies of a 39-year-old woman, an 8-year-old girl, a 4-year-old boy, and a 52-year-old man were found just before 5:30 p.m. on May 4, 2026. Investigators determined that the man, later identified as Matthew Mitchell, fatally shot his wife and children before turning the gun on himself.
Police responded to a welfare check after the children’s babysitter discovered they had not arrived at school. No one entered the home prior to law enforcement’s arrival.
Family and Community React
On May 5, ABC 13 reported the identities of the victims. Thy Mitchell and her husband Matthew owned two popular Houston restaurants, Traveler’s Table and Traveler’s Cart, and also ran a clothing brand. Mitchell’s sister, Ly Mai, confirmed the deaths in a Facebook post, expressing heartbreak and requesting privacy.
Thy’s father, Thuy Mai, noted the family’s devastation and hinted at mental health struggles and gun access as factors. He shared that all security footage from the home has been handed to authorities to aid the investigation.
Business Legacy Continues
Despite the tragedy, both Traveler’s Table and Traveler’s Cart are continuing normal operations. The family also announced plans to create the Thy Mai Foundation in honor of Thy, Maya, and Max, aiming to preserve their lasting impact on the community.
Tributes Pour In
Many in the restaurant and hospitality community have expressed grief and paid tribute to Mitchell. Brittany Meisner, who managed publicity for Mitchell, wrote on Instagram:
“Thy was not only a client, but a great friend. She was a devoted mother and businesswoman. Young and innocent lives gone way too soon. Sending love and hugs.”
Chef Jassi Bindra described her as energetic and passionate about the restaurant world, while Texas Restaurant Association President Craig Howard praised her vision and leadership.
Ongoing Investigation
Police continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the murders. No prior domestic violence records were reported at the Mitchells’ home, and authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward.
This heartbreaking story is a reminder of the devastating impact of family violence and mental health struggles. The Houston community continues to mourn the loss of Thy Mitchell and her children while honoring her contributions to local business and hospitality.
