Ohio Dad Charged in Infant’s Death
Chance Terrence Topp, a father of three from Ohio, allegedly suffocated his 4-month-old daughter, Riley Jo Topp, with a pacifier. Authorities say he became overwhelmed after her constant crying, and now he faces serious criminal charges.
First responders were called to a home in Utica shortly after 7 p.m. on October 13, 2023. They found Riley unresponsive and rushed her to Licking Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Doctors noticed suspicious bruises on her neck and jaw, prompting a more than two-year investigation into her death.
What Happened That Night
Court documents show that Topp told authorities he heard Riley gasping for air in her crib. He claimed he tried CPR and ran for help but did not call 911. Investigators found that Riley had bruising consistent with forced pressure and tested positive for Delta-8 THC, a cannabis derivative.
Topp admitted to police that he had used THC earlier that day to calm himself while caring for Riley and that he would often drink alcohol, smoke, or play video games while the baby was nearby. His frustration reportedly led him to press Riley’s pacifier against her face, causing her death.
Charges and Legal Consequences
Topp now faces 12 criminal charges, including:
- Aggravated murder
- Two counts of murder
- Two counts of involuntary manslaughter
- Two counts of child endangerment
- Strangulation
- Reckless homicide
- Felonious assault
- Domestic violence
- Falsification
Under Ohio law, a conviction for aggravated murder could result in the death penalty.
