New York man known as 'Midnight' sentenced for fatal beating near a Chuck E. Cheese

A brutal attack outside a Chuck E. Cheese in Nassau County has led to a life-altering sentence for one of the perpetrators. Dennis Ray, 64, also known as “Midnight,” was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the 2022 beating of Jose Osma, who later died from his injuries.

Deadly Assault Outside Chuck E. Cheese

On April 22, 2022, Dennis Ray and his co-defendant, Tyrell Guthrie, attacked 59-year-old Jose Osma behind a Chuck E. Cheese during the commission of a robbery, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office. Osma was discovered the following morning with severe injuries and no identification. He was admitted to the hospital as a John Doe until his family located him through a missing person report.

Osma endured a year of multiple brain surgeries, paralysis, and extensive rehabilitation but tragically died on April 30, 2023, due to complications from his injuries.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Dennis Ray was arrested on May 7, 2022, by the Nassau County Police Department. Tyrell Guthrie later pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in November 2023 and was sentenced to 18 years in prison on January 29, 2024.

Ray’s trial concluded with his conviction, and he was sentenced on May 20, 2026, to 25 years to life in prison. District Attorney Anne Donnelly said:

“Dennis Ray has never taken responsibility or shown any regret for the vicious beating he inflicted upon Jose Osma four years ago over a wallet and a cellphone. Jose’s children watched in anguish as their father suffered through a coma, paralysis, and multiple brain surgeries, unable to speak or feed himself until he finally died from his injuries.”

Impact on the Victim’s Family

The attack devastated Osma’s family, who were initially unaware of his whereabouts and then had to witness his prolonged suffering. Donnelly emphasized the severity of the crime, noting how the assault led to an “endless cycle of brain surgeries, paralysis, rehab, and hospitalizations” until Osma’s death.

This case highlights the long-lasting consequences of violent crime and the importance of accountability for acts of extreme brutality.
