A Cleveland courtroom has delivered justice in the tragic death of a father who was trying to protect his son.

Ohio Couple Pleads Guilty in Father’s Death

Marvin Atkins and Ann Marie Clayton, both 36, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of 37-year-old Norman Duncan. The incident occurred on April 14, 2025, following a fight between two 12-year-old boys in a Cleveland neighborhood. One of the boys was Duncan’s son, while the other was the child of Atkins and Clayton.

Attack During Neighborhood Fight

During the altercation, Atkins and Clayton reportedly held Duncan’s son against his will. When Duncan intervened to protect his child, the couple attacked him. Clayton struck Duncan in the head with a brick, but he and his son managed to escape and start walking away.

As they were leaving, Atkins and Clayton got into a Chevy Impala and intentionally ran over Duncan after jumping the curb. Duncan’s son immediately called 911, but despite being rushed to the hospital, Duncan later died from his injuries.

Arrest and Initial Charges

Atkins and Clayton evaded authorities for nine days before they were found at a home in another part of Cleveland and taken into custody. Both were initially charged with aggravated murder, two counts of murder, attempted murder, and three counts of felonious assault.

Sentencing and Apologies in Court

On May 14, 2026, both Atkins and Clayton pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. During the sentencing hearing, Atkins was sentenced to 15 to 20½ years in prison, while Clayton received a three-year sentence.

Both defendants apologized to Duncan’s family during the hearing. Clayton said, “If I could rewind the hands of time, I would’ve made sure this never happened,” while Atkins told the family, “I’m not, like, a monster. I didn’t mean to hit him.” A member of Duncan’s family accepted Clayton’s apology, stating, “I feel that it is sincere.”

This case highlights the devastating consequences of violent behavior and the importance of accountability, particularly when it involves protecting children. The tragic loss of Norman Duncan underscores the long-term impact such acts of violence have on families and communities.
