A Vernon Parish jury has quickly convicted a woman in the death of a 4-year-old child, delivering justice after only five minutes of deliberation.
Woman Convicted of Murdering Child
Terrie Gray, 49, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of 4-year-old Athena Rose Denise Miller. She was also convicted of second-degree cruelty of a juvenile, a charge stemming from injuries discovered on Athena’s 2-year-old brother, who lived in the same home with Gray and his father, 26-year-old Logan Miller.
Vernon Parish District Attorney Terry praised the investigation and prosecution, stating, “My office will continue to seek to hold people accountable for horrific crimes such as these.” The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Lea R. Hall.
Trial and Evidence
The trial drew a large courtroom audience as witnesses detailed the abuse suffered by Athena. Photographs and testimony revealed multiple burn injuries, cuts and bruises, and broken bones.
District Attorney Lambright noted the emotional impact, saying, “Anytime we have a serious case like this that involves a child, it impacts the entire community. When adults do terrible things to a child, it goes right to the heart of what people believe is right and wrong.”
Circumstances of Athena’s Death
Authorities reported that Athena was found unresponsive in her room at a Leesville residence on November 6, 2024. Gray’s teenage daughter testified that she discovered the child lying on the floor covered in bruises and blood shortly after seeing Gray leave the room and immediately called 911.
Athena was transported to Byrd Regional Hospital before being airlifted to a trauma-level hospital in Shreveport, where she died the following day. Medical experts determined her death was caused by blunt force trauma to the head.
Sentencing and Next Steps
Gray is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge C. Anthony Eaves on August 25. Under Louisiana law, first-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence without probation or parole, and the cruelty charge carries a maximum of 40 years in prison.
Logan Miller is also facing trial for the same charges, with his case set to begin on October 19.
