The Democratic National Committee has released a controversial report analyzing what went wrong for Democrats and then-Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election loss to President Donald Trump.
DNC Report Sparks Controversy
The report, prepared by Democratic consultant Paul Rivera, has been widely disputed within the party. DNC Chair Ken Martin initially delayed its public release, citing concerns that it would distract from focusing on the future.
However, frustration among donors over the delay prompted Martin to release the report on Thursday, along with an apology. He said, “After last November’s massive Democratic wins, I didn’t want to create a distraction, but by not putting the report out, I ended up creating an even bigger distraction. For that, I sincerely apologize.”
Findings on Harris’ Campaign
The report claims the Biden campaign failed to properly support Harris, stating that “the White House did not effectively support [Harris] over three and half years to improve her standing before the candidate switch.”
It also asserts that Democrats did not provide a compelling reason to vote against Trump and that Harris’ campaign relied too heavily on painting Trump as unacceptable rather than making a case for her own candidacy.
The audit further suggests that Harris underperformed with young Latino and Black male voters because the campaign took these groups for granted while focusing heavily on women.
It criticizes the campaign’s outreach, particularly to rural and “irregular” voters, and points to inconsistent messaging on issues such as abortion access. The report argues that these missteps have eroded public trust in the party.
Report Limitations and DNC Disclaimer
Martin emphasized that the report is being released “as we received it” and warned that it does not meet the DNC’s standards. Each page contains a disclaimer noting that the views are those of the author, not the DNC, and that the committee could not independently verify much of the underlying data.
The report lacks a conclusion section and contains multiple errors, including misspellings, faulty numbers, and inconsistencies with publicly reported information.
Notably, the report does not mention the Israel-Gaza war or consider its potential impact on the 2024 election, despite outside speculation that voter sentiment over Biden’s handling of the conflict may have affected Democratic performance.
It also highlights the effect of Trump campaign ads targeting Harris’ support for transgender rights, which reportedly influenced voter perception.
Backlash From Democrats
The release has drawn significant criticism from Democratic insiders. One party source called it “a disaster,” criticizing both the analysis and the appearance of incompetence in evaluating the 2024 election. Former DNC Vice Chair David Hogg labeled the report and the months-long debate over its release “a demoralizing joke” and called for Martin to resign.
The report underscores ongoing tensions within the DNC as the party grapples with lessons from the 2024 election and debates how to strengthen strategy ahead of future races.
