Texas Woman Arrested for Murder After Allegedly Killing Young Acquaintance
A shocking case in Texas has left a family grieving after 21-year-old Maysie Murphy was allegedly shot and killed by 55-year-old Courtney Smith. The incident has drawn attention because Smith reportedly called police on herself before deputies arrived.
Police Respond to the Scene
Deputies from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a home on May 18, 2026, after Smith reportedly called law enforcement around 1:30 p.m., saying she was “seeing demons and things of that nature.”
When deputies arrived at approximately 3:45 p.m., they found Murphy dead from a gunshot wound. Smith was already waiting at the scene and allegedly admitted to committing the crime.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed that Smith was taken into custody and charged with murder.
Relationship Between Victim and Suspect
Authorities clarified that Smith and Murphy were not related by blood. Both women lived at a home owned by a couple who were out of town at the time. The couple reportedly met Smith online and allowed her to stay in their house.
According to Major Ben Katrib, Murphy was like a granddaughter to the homeowners, but there was no indication of any romantic involvement or other family ties between the two women.
Investigation Details
Harris County Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators conducted a full investigation at the home. Deputies noted that Smith had previously acted unusually, and her earlier call to police did not provide enough information for an emergency detention order.
Details about the motive for the shooting remain unclear as authorities continue their investigation.
Family Reaction and Tributes
Murphy’s parents released a heartfelt statement describing their daughter as kind, outgoing, and full of life.
“Maysie loved and was loved by anybody who’s ever come in contact with her. The world is definitely a darker place without her. Taken from us so early. The hole and hurt are felt by so many; may our daughter rest easy,” her father said.
Her mother added, “She was such a great sister to her siblings and always there when someone needed her. She would light up any room she walked into. To know her is to love her. Genuine, kind, outgoing and had so many goals in life. She will be dearly missed.”
Murphy’s sister also paid tribute on social media, writing, “My little sister gained her angel wings. We were just talking about how excited you were for the wedding coming up. I know you will still be there with me in spirit. Life is not fair and this is very hard to understand. Our hearts are shattered. I love you forever Maysie.”
