Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation as Director of National Intelligence to focus on supporting her husband after his cancer diagnosis, sparking criticism from some media and Democratic leaders.
Tulsi Gabbard Resigns
Gabbard’s final day in the role is expected to be June 30, 2026. In her formal resignation letter obtained by Fox News Digital, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity but explained:
“My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. I cannot in good conscience ask him to face this fight alone while I continue in this demanding and time-consuming position.”
Gabbard, a U.S. Army Reserve officer and combat veteran, previously served multiple terms in Congress, leaving the Democratic Party to become an independent and later joining the Republican Party.
Criticism from Media and Democrats
Some media figures and Democratic lawmakers criticized Gabbard’s resignation. CNN guests made jokes about her tenure, and former Deputy DNI Beth Sanner quipped that her DNI title stood for “Do Not Invite.”
Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) tweeted:
“While the circumstances around her departure are deserving of our sympathy, let’s be clear: Tulsi Gabbard’s only positive contribution to our nation’s national security is her resignation.”
Defense of Gabbard
Tony Kinnett, national correspondent for The Daily Signal, said the immediate political attacks were inappropriate. Speaking on Fox & Friends Weekend, he said the criticism reflects a “lack of character” in some media and political commentators.
“The most principled thing you can do as a wife is to leave something behind… to support your spouse,” Kinnett said.
President Donald Trump also praised Gabbard on Truth Social, writing that she “rightfully” wants to support her husband and calling her work “incredible.”
Personal Note from Gabbard
In her resignation letter, Gabbard highlighted her husband’s role as her “rock” throughout 11 years of marriage and during her military deployments overseas. She emphasized the importance of being present for him during this difficult time.
