A woman has claimed that more than $7,000 worth of her belongings were stolen after she experienced a medical emergency while flying solo on an American Airlines flight, sparking outrage on social media.
Incident on the Flight
The passenger, Hope (@hopieswrld on TikTok), shared her story in a video that has been viewed over 339,200 times. According to Hope, she began feeling unwell while boarding a flight at Miami International Airport to New York City for her best friend’s birthday.
She told viewers that the plane was packed, hot, and overstimulating, leaving her lightheaded. Attempting to cool down, she tried to get to the bathroom but subsequently fainted in the aisle.
A flight attendant allowed her to stay in the back of the plane, providing ice and water until landing.
Missing Belongings
Once the flight landed at LaGuardia Airport, Hope returned to her seat to retrieve her purse and personal items—but they were gone.
Flight attendants could not locate the bag and directed her to baggage claim. Hope spent an hour and a half contacting lost and found and airport staff, eventually involving local police, who reviewed security footage.
According to Hope, footage showed a mother and her two children taking her bag, hiding the items in a bathroom, and leaving the airport via Uber. Her possessions included her ID, wallet, and other essentials, totaling roughly $7,000.
Challenges with American Airlines
Hope reached out to American Airlines customer service, only to be told to file an online form. Later, she received an email stating the airline was not responsible for carry-on items, citing their conditions of carriage, which differentiate carry-on items from checked luggage.
While Hope acknowledged that she is thankful to be safe, she expressed frustration that the airline refuses to take responsibility and wants the individuals who took her belongings to be found.

American Airlines Policy
American Airlines allows passengers to bring one personal item and one carry-on, but states in its conditions of carriage that it does not cover items carried in the cabin. Because Hope’s bag was taken from the plane after she fainted, the airline considers the loss outside of its liability, though law enforcement involvement may provide a path to recovery.
