A tragic road accident in Florida has left a young family shattered after a 21-year-old college student lost her life in a suspected drunk-driving crash. Lauryn Akey, a student at University of South Florida, was returning home from a friend’s wedding when the deadly collision happened in the early hours of May 17.
Just before the accident, Lauryn sent a final text message to her family saying she loved them and would be home soon. Sadly, only minutes later, her car was hit head-on by a pickup truck allegedly being driven the wrong way on Interstate 75 by a drunk driver.
The heartbreaking incident has once again raised serious concerns about drunk driving and road safety in the United States.
How the Crash Happened
According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, Lauryn had stopped for gas while driving back from a wedding in Charlotte County, Florida. Around 1 a.m., a Ford F-150 truck driven by 53-year-old Dennis Olson reportedly entered the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 while travelling southbound.
Olson’s truck then crashed directly into Lauryn’s Honda CR-V.
The impact was so severe that Lauryn was thrown out of her vehicle. Emergency responders reached the scene quickly, but she was declared dead shortly afterward.
Police documents revealed that Olson later told officers he had been having a “bad night.”
Driver Was Nearly Three Times Over the Legal Alcohol Limit
Investigators said Olson showed clear signs of intoxication after the crash. Witnesses reported that he was slurring his speech while being helped out of his truck.
Authorities later tested his blood alcohol concentration (BAC), which reportedly measured 0.222 — almost three times higher than the legal limit.
Olson claimed he had consumed only one glass of wine and was returning from a restaurant in Fort Myers before the crash happened.
Police also discovered that shortly before hitting Lauryn’s car, Olson had allegedly sideswiped another vehicle carrying a woman and two children from Arcadia, Florida. One of the children reportedly needed surgery after suffering injuries in the incident.

Lauryn was studying exercise science at the University of South Florida and hoped to become a nurse in the future.
Her mother, Melinda Mucho, described Lauryn as a bright and caring young woman whose life was just beginning.
She shared that Lauryn planned to graduate next year and had many dreams ahead of her with her boyfriend and loved ones.
Family members and friends have since started using the hashtag #lovelikelauryn on social media to honour her memory and spread positivity in her name.
Emotional Tribute From Boyfriend
Lauryn’s boyfriend, Garrett Day, posted an emotional tribute online after her death. He shared videos and memories of their time together, including fishing trips, gaming moments, and road travels.
In his message, he wrote that he hoped Lauryn was “holding your pink fishing pole tight catching every fish you ever wanted to.”
The tribute touched many people online and quickly spread across social media platforms, with users sharing condolences and messages against drunk driving.
