A Michigan man has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted of killing a Facebook Marketplace seller during what began as a meeting to buy car parts. The shocking case has drawn attention because investigators say the deadly encounter escalated from an online sale into a violent confrontation that ended in murder.
Omar Brogdon, 31, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being found guilty in the killing of 38-year-old Orhan Hosic. According to court records and prosecutors, the incident happened during a Facebook Marketplace meeting involving the sale of Corvette car seats.
The case was investigated by authorities in Genesee County and later resulted in multiple convictions against Brogdon, including second-degree murder, felony murder, armed robbery, and weapons charges.
How the Facebook Marketplace Meeting Turned Deadly
According to investigators, the deadly incident took place on July 6, 2024, when Brogdon travelled to Hosic’s apartment to purchase two Corvette seats that had been listed for sale online through Facebook Marketplace.
Reports stated that the Corvette seats were later discovered inside the orange Camaro Brogdon had driven to the apartment complex.
Authorities said the meeting eventually turned violent after the two men reportedly began arguing about luxury sports car brands, specifically Mercedes and BMW vehicles.
What started as a disagreement quickly escalated into a physical altercation before Hosic was fatally shot.
Investigation Linked Brogdon to the Crime
Prosecutors said investigators gathered both digital and physical evidence connecting Brogdon to the killing.
According to Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, investigators were able to trace the online Marketplace transaction that brought the two men together. Witnesses also reportedly saw an orange Camaro parked outside Hosic’s residence around the time of the killing.
Authorities later connected the vehicle to Brogdon after locating it at a Detroit address.
Investigators also reportedly tracked activity involving Hosic’s phone after the murder. Prosecutors stated that at one point someone called the victim’s phone, and it was answered from a motel located in the Detroit metropolitan area.
The evidence played a major role during the trial and helped prosecutors secure convictions on multiple serious charges.
Sheriff Explains “Red Herring” Investigation Tactic
Chris Swanson, the local sheriff involved in the investigation, later explained that detectives used what he described as a “red herring” method during the case.
According to Swanson, investigators intentionally avoided revealing certain information publicly so Brogdon would believe police had very few leads.
Authorities said this strategy helped preserve important evidence because the suspect allegedly did not attempt to destroy or hide crucial items connected to the crime.
The investigation eventually led to Brogdon’s arrest and prosecution.
Brogdon Spoke During Sentencing
During his sentencing hearing on May 18, Brogdon addressed the court and expressed regret over what happened.
He described the killing as “an unfortunate event” and claimed he felt scared and cornered during the confrontation.
However, the court ultimately sentenced him to life imprisonment without parole due to the seriousness of the crimes and the evidence presented during trial.
Victim’s Family Shares Emotional Statement
One of the most emotional moments during sentencing came when Hosic’s stepmother addressed the court with a victim impact statement.
She spoke about the many difficulties Hosic had faced throughout his life, including surviving childhood cancer and dealing with facial disfigurement.
In a heartbreaking statement directed at Brogdon, she reminded the court that Hosic had already overcome enormous personal challenges before his life was taken away.
She also referenced the fatal gunshot injury and said Brogdon had taken the only eye Hosic could see from.
The emotional testimony left a strong impact inside the courtroom as family members continued mourning the loss of a loved one they described as resilient and hardworking.
