A devastating highway pileup in Ohio that killed three members of the same family has now led to criminal charges and multiple lawsuits against a truck driver accused of causing the deadly crash. Survivors and grieving relatives say the driver failed to pay attention as traffic slowed in a construction zone, leading to a horrific chain-reaction collision involving several vehicles.
The tragic accident happened on April 11 along Interstate 71 near the Tanger Outlets Columbus area in Delaware County.
Authorities say truck driver Modou Ngom, who allegedly also used the name Lamine Gaye, was behind the wheel of a semi-truck when the deadly crash occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m.
Three Family Members Killed in Crash
The crash claimed the lives of 37-year-old Luke Soposki, 36-year-old Lynnea Soposki, and their 1-year-old child Logan.
According to investigators, traffic had slowed in a construction zone near the interchange connecting Interstate 71, U.S. Route 36, and State Route 37 when the semi-truck allegedly failed to stop.
Authorities said the truck slammed into several vehicles already moving slowly in the far-right lane. Traffic camera footage reportedly showed the white semi-truck crashing into multiple cars, with at least one vehicle bursting into flames immediately after impact.
Officials stated that the truck then crossed into the median while pushing damaged vehicles along with it.
A total of nine vehicles were reportedly involved in the devastating collision.
Driver Now Facing Serious Criminal Charges
Following the investigation, prosecutors charged Modou Ngom with three counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and four counts of vehicular assault.
The charges are all felony offenses connected to the deadly pileup and injuries suffered by several victims.
Authorities also revealed that Ngom remains in custody at the Delaware County Jail after his bond was set at $500,000.
Several other victims involved in the crash were taken to nearby hospitals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Families File Lawsuits Over Crash
The victims’ families have now started legal action against Ngom, accusing him of negligence and reckless behaviour.
The estate of the Soposki family filed a lawsuit through executor Vic Whitney. According to the legal complaint, Ngom allegedly showed a “conscious disregard” for the safety of others on the highway.
The lawsuit claims the truck driver should have known his actions could cause major harm or death, especially while driving near slowed traffic inside a construction area.
Family members also stated in court filings that they continue to suffer severe emotional pain, grief, and trauma because of the deadly collision.
Another victim, Alyssa Harris, also filed a lawsuit alongside her husband. According to the complaint, the crash caused extreme fear, suffering, and emotional distress for her family.
Questions Raised About Driver’s Identity
The case has drawn even more attention after investigators reportedly uncovered conflicting information regarding Ngom’s identity.
According to Ohio officials, evidence suggests the driver may have used a different identity, Lamine Gaye, to obtain an Ohio driver’s license years ago.
Authorities also alleged he later received a commercial driver’s license under the same alternate name before reportedly changing his name back to Modou Ngom in 2015.
Officials stated that records show he became a naturalized U.S. citizen during the mid-2010s while using the alternate identity.
Investigators are continuing to review state and federal records connected to the identity allegations.
Community Mourning After Deadly Highway Crash
The tragic crash has deeply affected families and local communities across Ohio, especially because an entire young family lost their lives in seconds during what should have been a normal drive.
Loved ones continue mourning Luke, Lynnea, and baby Logan while survivors recover from both physical injuries and emotional trauma caused by the violent crash.
