A potential school shooting in Illinois was reportedly stopped before anyone was hurt after a quick-thinking relative noticed a boy carrying a firearm and immediately called 911, according to authorities.
The alarming incident happened Friday in Plainfield Township, located in the greater Chicago area. Officials say the juvenile was allegedly on his way to carry out a shooting at Grand Prairie Elementary School before family intervention and police response prevented the situation from escalating.
Authorities praised the relative’s actions, saying the decision to act quickly may have saved lives.
Relative Spotted Gun and Called 911
According to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a home on Helmar Lane around 12:50 p.m. after receiving a report involving a suicidal individual.
When officers arrived, they found a juvenile and a relative at the scene.
Investigators later revealed that the relative had discovered the boy armed with a firearm and physically restrained him while calling emergency services for help.
Authorities have not publicly released the identities or ages of those involved because the suspect is a juvenile.
Police Say Boy Planned School Attack
During the investigation, deputies allegedly learned the juvenile intended to target Grand Prairie Elementary School.
Officials said the child was detained before reaching the school.
Investigators recovered multiple concerning items from the suspect, including a Glock handgun, loaded magazines, knives, gloves, an accelerant, and other materials found inside a backpack.
Authorities have not yet shared details about a possible motive or whether the school had been specifically threatened beforehand.
Juvenile Taken for Mental Health Evaluation
According to officials, the boy made suicidal and homicidal statements to first responders after being detained.
Because of those statements, authorities transported him to a hospital for mental health evaluation and treatment.
As of now, formal charges have not been announced.
The investigation remains ongoing while detectives continue reviewing evidence and speaking with witnesses.
Extra Security Added at School
Police increased security around Grand Prairie Elementary School following the incident to reassure students, parents, and staff.
Friday reportedly marked the final day of the school year, adding even greater concern to the situation.
