Supporters gathered Monday outside the home of Kerry Sheron in Escondido after news spread that the Army veteran had died following a violent attack.
People left flowers at the property and waved American flags in his honor.
Sheron, 69, was known in the neighborhood for displaying pro-Trump signs and flags outside his home.
Attack Happened Outside Home
According to reports, the assault happened last Wednesday outside Sheron’s home on Buchanan Street.
Authorities said Sheron suffered severe injuries after being beaten during the incident.
A bystander who attempted to help was also reportedly injured.
Sheron’s wife, Maria Sheron, confirmed he died from his injuries Sunday night.
Suspect Arrested After Assault
Police said Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, was located nearby and arrested after the attack.
According to reports, Butler has pleaded not guilty.
He was previously charged with attempted murder, elder ab*se, criminal threats, and battery.
Officials said it was not immediately clear whether additional charges would be filed following Sheron’s death.
Authorities confirmed Butler remains jailed without bail.
Prosecutors Describe Violent Beating
Prosecutors described the assault as unprovoked.
Deputy District Attorney Ross Garcia said Sheron suffered devastating head injuries during the attack.
According to court statements, Sheron was allegedly punched in the jaw before falling to the ground, where additional blows reportedly followed.
Investigators said security footage allegedly captured part of the incident before the suspect fled on foot.
Neighbors Remember Sheron
Friends, relatives, and neighbors gathered outside the home after learning of Sheron’s death.
Neighbor Jim Gillie described Sheron as someone who strongly believed in free speech and patriotism.
Reports also stated that Sheron had previously spoken publicly about vandalism targeting his home and political displays.
Political Motive Not Confirmed
Maria Sheron previously said she believed her husband may have been targeted because of the pro-Trump signs outside the home.
However, authorities said they have not confirmed any political motive in the attack.
The investigation remains ongoing.
