Sharyn Alfonsi leaves '60 Minutes' following feud with Bari Weiss, criticises CBS for 'chilling message' to newsroom

Sharyn Alfonsi announced that CBS News has declined to renew her contract, ending nearly 20 years with the network, including more than a decade at 60 Minutes.

The departure follows a high-profile editorial dispute over a segment titled Inside CECOT, which investigated alleged abuses at the El Salvador prison CECOT. Alfonsi accused CBS editor-in-chief Bari Weiss of delaying the story for political reasons, rather than editorial considerations.

Alfonsi Speaks Out on Contract Non-Renewal

Alfonsi said her agent’s repeated attempts to negotiate with network executives were ignored, and she criticized CBS for “abandoning its mission to prioritize independent reporting.”

“Fearless, independent reporting has always been the defining standard at ‘60 Minutes.’ Today, CBS management is abandoning that mission, choosing access journalism over accountability,” Alfonsi said.

She also warned that allowing political considerations to delay or suppress factual reporting sets a “chilling message” for journalists and undermines editorial independence.

The CECOT Segment Controversy

The Inside CECOT story featured Alfonsi interviewing released deportees who described torturous conditions in the prison. CBS initially delayed the segment in December, citing the need for additional reporting after the Trump administration did not respond to requests for comment.

Alfonsi insisted that all internal legal and editorial reviews were completed and described the delay as politically motivated. CBS eventually aired the segment in January.

Past Reporting Controversies

Alfonsi previously faced criticism in 2021 for a 60 Minutes segment investigating Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ COVID vaccine distribution partnership with Publix, which some argued overstated political influence.

The dispute over Inside CECOT is the latest controversy during Weiss’ tenure, which has also seen multiple high-profile exits, prompting accusations from liberal critics that corporate interests and political considerations are being prioritized over journalism.
