A shocking case has emerged from Washington state, where a 31-year-old man is accused of pretending to be a U.S. Postal Service worker to carry out an alleged extortion and violent attack.
Police say the suspect dressed in a mail carrier uniform, delivered a threatening letter demanding cryptocurrency, and then forced his way into the victims’ home.
Man Arrested for Alleged Extortion and Assault
Ian Alexander Blair was arrested and charged with burglary, assault, and extortion. According to the Seattle Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call around 2:16 p.m. on February 20. The incident took place in the 300 block of North 74th Street in the Phinney Ridge neighbourhood of Seattle.
While heading to the scene, officers were informed that the suspect was dressed as a mail carrier and was attacking the homeowner. When police arrived, witnesses guided them to the house.
Inside, officers reportedly found Blair in a physical struggle with the 52-year-old homeowner. The man’s 50-year-old wife was standing nearby in distress. Police separated the two and took control of the situation.
Disguised as a Postal Worker
Authorities say Blair was wearing a mail carrier uniform. Underneath the uniform, he allegedly had on a Tyvek-style protective suit, which is often used for hazardous material protection.
When officers asked if he worked for the U.S. Postal Service, Blair initially refused to answer and later said only one word: “Lawyer.”
Police believe the disguise was used to gain the victims’ trust and access to their home.
Extortion Letter Demanding Cryptocurrency
According to investigators, the homeowner answered the door after hearing the doorbell ring. Blair allegedly stood at the doorway holding a piece of mail and instructed the man to open it immediately.
The letter reportedly demanded ten bitcoins in exchange for information related to a civil lawsuit involving the victim. The message warned that if the payment was not made within one week, the information would be given to the opposing side in the lawsuit.
The letter stated:
- Five bitcoins were to be paid upfront.
- Five more bitcoins would be paid after the information was delivered.
As the homeowner read the letter, Blair allegedly forced his way inside the house.
Violent Struggle Inside the Home
Police say that once inside, Blair assaulted both victims. He allegedly punched and strangled the wife when she tried to help her husband.
Officers later searched Blair’s bag and found several suspicious items, including:
- Black Gorilla tape
- Heavy-duty black plastic bags
- Large zip ties
- Tasers
- A tourniquet
- A prepaid burner phone
- A face mask and dark sunglasses
- Plastic gloves
- An electronic signal-blocking pouch
Authorities believe these items may have been intended to assist in carrying out the crime.
Arrest and Current Status
Blair was taken into custody at the scene and later booked into the King County Jail. He is currently being held on a $1 million bond.
As of now, officials have not confirmed when he will next appear in court.
