A tragic road accident in San Antonio took an even more disturbing turn when deputies investigating the scene had to jump out of the way of an allegedly intoxicated driver. Authorities say the woman drove through the active crash site and ran over the body of a man who had already been killed moments earlier.
Fatal Crash on State Highway 211
The incident happened Friday night on State Highway 211 near Lambada Drive in San Antonio, Bexar County. According to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, a 61-year-old man was walking across the road when he was first hit by a vehicle’s side mirror. The impact knocked him to the ground.
Soon after, a second driver was unable to stop in time and ran over the man, killing him. Deputies said they do not believe the first two drivers were at fault in the incident.
Driver Allegedly Runs Over Victim During Investigation
After the fatal collision, deputies secured the area. The victim’s body was covered, and investigators began examining the scene.
However, during the investigation, a third vehicle suddenly entered the closed-off area. Authorities identified the driver as 26-year-old Tionne Spears.
Sheriff Salazar said deputies had to quickly move out of the way as Spears allegedly drove through the scene. She then ran over the victim’s body, despite the area being blocked off for investigation.
Thankfully, none of the deputies were injured during the incident.
Charges Filed Against Tionne Spears
Spears was immediately taken into custody. She now faces multiple charges, including:
- Driving while intoxicated (DWI)
- Abuse of a corpse
- Possession of a controlled substance
Authorities suspect Spears was under the influence of khat at the time. Khat is a plant native to Africa known for causing stimulation, increased confidence, and reduced sensitivity to pain.
Sheriff Salazar explained that khat has gained attention in the past due to its depiction in the movie “Black Hawk Down.”
Sheriff’s Statement on the Incident
Sheriff Salazar expressed relief that investigators were not harmed but called the situation deeply unfortunate. He noted that the victim, who had already lost his life in a tragic accident, had his body run over again due to what officials describe as Spears’ intoxicated state and lack of awareness.
The incident has shocked the local community, especially because it occurred while law enforcement officers were actively working at the scene.
Current Legal Status
Spears was booked into the Bexar County Jail. She has since posted a bond of $14,100. Her next court appearance is scheduled for March 30.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
