Damon Leonard, 47, has been charged with second-degree murder and several other offences in connection with the death of 13-year-old Airen Andula.
According to prosecutors, Leonard’s unleashed dogs, described as mixed mastiff and pit bull breeds, allegedly attacked Airen while he was riding his bicycle through the neighbourhood in December 2025.
The charges against Leonard include second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, interference with law enforcement, criminal desecration by unauthorized control of a dead body, and permitting a dangerous animal to run at large.

Airen Andula Was Helping a Friend
Airen Andula was a seventh-grade student who lived near Leonard’s property in Linn County, Kansas.
According to family members, Airen had agreed to help a friend by taking care of the family’s animals while they were away. His task was simple and expected to take only a few minutes. He planned to ride to his friend’s home, let out the chickens, a pet rooster, and the dogs, and then return home shortly afterward.
His mother later said the trip should have taken no more than ten minutes in total.
