A Pennsylvania woman has been sentenced after admitting that she failed to report the ab*se of her boyfriend’s young daughter and did not seek medical help for the child despite signs of severe mistreatment.
The case came to light after emergency responders found the 3-year-old girl unconscious and suffering from serious injuries that medical experts said were inconsistent with the explanation initially provided by caregivers.
Pennsylvania Woman Sentenced in Child Ab*se Case
Alyssa Kithcart, 26, has been sentenced to three months in prison followed by three years of probation after pleading guilty to endangering the welfare of a child.
Court records show that additional charges of endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person were dismissed as part of the legal proceedings.
Kithcart is currently being held at the Bradford County Correctional Facility while her boyfriend’s criminal case remains ongoing.
Investigation Began After Emergency Call
The investigation started on May 20, 2025, when police officers and paramedics responded to a home in Athens, Pennsylvania, following a report that a toddler had suffered a head injury.
When first responders arrived, they found the 3-year-old girl unconscious but still breathing. Authorities reported that the child was barely responsive and appeared to be in extremely poor physical condition.
Police noted that the child was severely underweight and showed signs of neglect. Due to the seriousness of her condition, she was transported to a hospital and later airlifted to another medical facility for specialized treatment.
Initial Explanation Raised Questions
According to investigators, Kithcart told officers that the child had climbed onto a coat rack and fallen.
Dalton Sweat, the child’s father, reportedly told police that he was on his way to work when Kithcart contacted him and informed him about the alleged accident.
However, medical professionals quickly determined that the child’s injuries did not match the description of a simple fall.
Doctors reported that the girl had suffered a broken collarbone, extensive bruising across her body, and severe malnourishment. The injuries prompted authorities to launch a deeper investigation into the child’s living conditions and treatment.
Child Allegedly Suffered Ongoing Ab*se
As investigators continued questioning the adults involved, more information began to emerge.
According to reports, Kithcart eventually admitted that Sweat’s treatment of his daughter was excessively harsh. She reportedly acknowledged that she should have reported the ab*se sooner.
Family members also described several alleged incidents involving the child. Witnesses claimed that Sweat had previously kicked the girl while wearing steel-toed boots, causing her to strike a wall and suffer a bloody nose.
