The United States and Ecuador have conducted a joint military operation targeting what officials described as “designated terrorist organizations” operating in Ecuador. While the mission involved coordination between the two countries, U.S. forces did not participate directly in combat on the ground. Instead, their role focused on providing planning and intelligence support to Ecuadorian forces.
U.S. and Ecuador Conduct Joint Military Operation
The joint operation was announced by U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) on March 3, 2026.
According to officials, the mission targeted groups described as terrorist organizations operating within Ecuador. The operation highlights increased cooperation between the United States and Latin American partners in combating organized crime and drug-related violence.
SOUTHCOM stated that the operation demonstrates the commitment of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to fight narco-terrorism and criminal organizations.
U.S. Military Provided Advisory Support
Although the operation involved the United States military, American forces did not participate directly in the combat phase.
A source familiar with the mission said the U.S. military’s role included:
- Providing planning assistance
- Sharing intelligence
- Offering operational guidance
U.S. military advisors were present in Ecuador to help prepare for the mission. However, the ground operation and airlift activities were carried out entirely by Ecuadorian forces.
First Land Operation Under Current Anti-Cartel Efforts
This operation marks the first time the U.S. military has been involved in a land-based mission against Latin American drug cartels during the current administration’s anti-cartel strategy.
Until now, U.S. military activity in the region had mostly focused on maritime operations.
Recent missions included airstrikes targeting drug smuggling boats in the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean, where several suspected narcotics trafficking vessels were intercepted.
Limited Details Released About the Mission
Officials have not released specific details about the location or targets involved in the operation.
SOUTHCOM also did not disclose whether any arrests were made or if weapons, drugs, or other materials were seized during the mission.
In addition to the announcement, the command released a video that appears to show Ecuadorian military personnel and aircraft involved in the operation.
However, the video did not include additional context or operational details.
Growing Cooperation Against Narco-Terrorism
The joint mission reflects growing cooperation between the United States and regional governments to address the rise of drug trafficking organizations and violent criminal networks.
Officials say such partnerships are intended to strengthen local security forces and improve intelligence-sharing across the region.
Latin America has seen increasing pressure from drug cartels and organized crime groups in recent years, prompting governments to seek international assistance.
