The long-running disappearance case of a West Virginia woman has taken a major turn after a man accused of killing her was returned to the state to face serious criminal charges. Nearly three years after Gretchen Fleming vanished after leaving a downtown bar, investigators located her remains and secured an indictment against the suspect they believe was responsible for her death.
Suspect Extradited Back to West Virginia
Preston Pierce, 58, has been extradited from North Carolina to West Virginia following his arrest in connection with the death of 27-year-old Gretchen Fleming.
Authorities announced that Pierce is now back in West Virginia after being taken into custody in the Asheville, North Carolina area. He is currently being held while awaiting court proceedings in Wood County.
A grand jury indicted Pierce on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, felony murder, kidnapping, and concealment of a deceased human body.
The extradition marks a significant development in a case that has remained under investigation since late 2022.
Gretchen Fleming Disappeared After Leaving Bar
According to investigators, Gretchen Fleming was last seen during the early morning hours of December 4, 2022.
Police said she left the My Way Lounge in downtown Parkersburg, West Virginia, accompanied by Preston Pierce. Authorities noted that Fleming left behind her purse and wallet, raising concerns about her well-being.
When family and friends were unable to contact her for more than a week, she was officially reported missing on December 12, 2022.
Her disappearance immediately prompted concern among loved ones and law enforcement officials.
Massive Search Effort Followed
Following the missing person report, authorities launched a large-scale search operation.
Hundreds of volunteers joined law enforcement officers in efforts to locate Fleming and uncover information about her disappearance.
Investigators spent years reviewing evidence, conducting interviews, and pursuing numerous leads related to the case.
Despite extensive efforts, authorities initially struggled to determine exactly what happened after Fleming left the bar that night.
The investigation remained active as detectives continued gathering information and examining potential evidence.
Human Remains Found Nearly Three Years Later
A major breakthrough occurred in September 2025 when investigators discovered human remains in a wooded area of Wirt County, West Virginia.
The location was approximately 20 miles south of Parkersburg.
Forensic testing later confirmed that the remains belonged to Gretchen Fleming.
The discovery provided investigators with critical evidence and allowed authorities to move forward with criminal charges.
The identification of Fleming’s remains ended years of uncertainty surrounding her disappearance but opened a new chapter in the homicide investigation.
Grand Jury Returns Serious Charges
On May 15, a Wood County grand jury formally indicted Pierce on several felony charges.
Prosecutors accused him of:
First-degree murder, felony murder, kidnapping, and concealment of a deceased human body.
These charges reflect investigators’ belief that Fleming’s disappearance and death involved criminal acts extending beyond the alleged homicide itself.
Authorities have not publicly released all details supporting the charges.
The evidence is expected to be presented through future court proceedings.
Investigation Previously Linked Pierce to Case
Investigators had focused on Pierce early in the investigation because he was reportedly the last known person seen with Fleming.
According to police statements released in January 2023, Pierce acknowledged that Fleming had been inside his vehicle around the time she disappeared.
However, authorities stated that he later declined to provide additional details regarding her whereabouts.
This information became an important part of the investigation as detectives worked to reconstruct the events leading up to Fleming’s disappearance.
Former Police Officer Reportedly Changed Name
Reports indicate that Pierce previously worked as a police officer.
According to local media reports, he also changed his name from Darrell Lott to Preston Pierce.
Authorities have not suggested that his former law enforcement background played a role in the case, but the detail has drawn public attention following his arrest.
Investigators have continued focusing on evidence gathered throughout the lengthy investigation.
Court Proceedings Expected Soon
Following his extradition, Pierce is being held pending arraignment in Wood County Circuit Court.
Officials have not yet announced a date for his first court appearance.
The arraignment will mark the beginning of formal court proceedings in the case.
As with all criminal cases, Pierce remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
Prosecutors will now begin presenting evidence supporting the charges while the defense prepares its response.
