A man in New York has been arrested and charged with multiple hate crimes after allegedly attacking a Jewish passenger on a subway train and ripping off his religious headwear. Authorities say the suspect repeatedly punched the victim while shouting offensive remarks before fleeing the scene.
Police tracked the suspect using surveillance footage and later arrested him at his home in Brooklyn. The incident has raised concerns about hate-related attacks on public transportation.
Suspect Arrested After Alleged Hate Crime Attack on NYC Subway
Police say Neil Hurlock, 20, was arrested Thursday night in connection with an attack on a 54-year-old Jewish man aboard a subway train.
According to authorities, the incident happened on a southbound N train at the Atlantic Avenue–Barclays Center station in Brooklyn.
Investigators say the suspect was identified through video footage and later located at his home in the Flatlands neighborhood.
Victim Allegedly Punched and Targeted for Religious Identity
Police said the attack occurred around 10:45 a.m. on Monday while the victim was riding the subway.
Authorities allege that the suspect, who was wearing a mask, suddenly began punching the victim several times.
During the assault, police say the attacker shouted offensive remarks directed at the victim’s religious identity.
The suspect then allegedly grabbed the victim’s yarmulke, a traditional Jewish head covering, and fled the scene.
Victim Hospitalized After Assault
Following the attack, the victim was taken to SUNY Downstate Medical Center for treatment.
Officials reported that he was in stable condition after receiving medical care.
The assault left the victim injured and shaken, according to police.
Multiple Hate Crime Charges Filed
Authorities have filed several charges against Hurlock, including multiple hate crime counts.

- Petit larceny as a hate crime

Previous Arrest Reported
According to police, Hurlock had been arrested previously in August in connection with another incident.
In that case, he allegedly threw a brick through the window of a doctor’s office on Flatlands Avenue in Canarsie.
Authorities said the shattered glass struck three people:
- A 69-year-old woman
- A 56-year-old man
- A 41-year-old man
Police initially charged him with misdemeanor assault in that case.
However, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office later confirmed that the case was sealed.
Arraignment Pending
As of Friday evening, Hurlock was awaiting arraignment.
Officials have not yet announced whether he will be held in custody or released pending further court proceedings.
