A shocking murder case from New Jersey has ended with a long prison sentence for a man who admitted killing his girlfriend and hiding her body in a refrigerator before dumping it in a forest.
The case deeply affected the victim’s family, especially her two daughters, who must now live with the pain of losing their mother in such a tragic way. The court’s decision brought some closure, but for the family, the emotional wounds may never fully heal.
New Jersey Man Sentenced for Killing Girlfriend
A 46-year-old man named Christopher Blevins has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for the death of his girlfriend, Laura Hughes, who was 50 years old. The sentence was given on Friday after Blevins had already pleaded guilty in October to first-degree aggravated manslaughter.
At first, prosecutors had charged him with first-degree murder. However, that charge was later dropped as part of a plea agreement. By pleading guilty, Blevins avoided a full trial but still received a long prison term.
The case shocked many people because of the disturbing way the crime was carried out. Authorities said Blevins strangled Hughes, hid her body in a refrigerator, and later transported it to a remote forest area.
Victim’s Children Speak About Their Pain
Laura Hughes leaves behind two daughters who are struggling to cope with the loss of their mother. During the court proceedings, the girls’ father, Cornel Alston, spoke about how deeply the crime has affected them.
One of the daughters, who is just 14 years old, described herself as a “secondary victim of homicide.” She explained that the emotional impact of the crime will stay with her for the rest of her life.
Alston told the court that no punishment can truly undo the damage caused by Hughes’ death.
He said that while prison time cannot bring Hughes back, the person responsible should never have the chance to live freely again.
He also expressed fear about the future, pointing out that Blevins could still be alive when he is released from prison.
According to Alston, the thought that the killer might someday walk freely in the same community is extremely painful for his children.
Blevins Apologizes in Court
During the sentencing hearing, Blevins apologised to the victim’s family. He told the court that he never intended to kill Hughes and that he regrets what happened.
He said he does not fully understand why the situation turned violent. According to him, he wishes he had simply walked away instead of staying in the moment that led to the tragedy.
Despite his apology, the family continues to struggle with the loss and the circumstances surrounding Hughes’ death.
Discovery of the Body in State Forest
The investigation began after human remains were discovered on December 22, 2024, in Belleplain State Forest in New Jersey.
When authorities first found the remains, they did not immediately know the victim’s identity. Police shared details about the person they believed the remains belonged to.
The description included:
- A woman around 5 feet 1 inch tall
- Possible Caucasian or Hispanic background
- A koi fish tattoo on the upper right back
- A rose tattoo on the left side of her ribs
Investigators also found a yoga mat and a necklace at the scene. These details later helped confirm that the remains belonged to Laura Hughes.
History of Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse
Authorities said the relationship between Blevins and Hughes had a troubled past. Reports suggested that the couple had experienced domestic violence issues along with drug and alcohol abuse.
These factors reportedly contributed to a pattern of conflict in their relationship.
Such situations often make investigations more complex, as arguments and violence may escalate unexpectedly.
Suspect Fled to Mexico After the Crime
After the incident, Blevins fled the United States. On August 2, 2024, he drove south through Texas and crossed the border into Mexico.
Later that month, on August 27, he surrendered himself to Mexican law enforcement authorities.
Following his arrest, Blevins reportedly told investigators that he panicked after being involved in a violent incident in New Jersey. He also mentioned that he believed he might have killed someone during a bar fight.
Investigators later connected him to the case through evidence and tracking data.
Police Evidence Helped Solve the Case
Authorities gathered strong evidence during the investigation. License plate reader cameras captured images of Blevins driving his green Dodge Ram pickup truck.
The vehicle was reportedly used to transport a refrigerator-shaped object on two separate occasions before Blevins left the country.
Police also confirmed that the truck was used solely by Blevins. Records showed that the same vehicle crossed into Mexico shortly after the suspected crime.
Investigators believe that Blevins brought the refrigerator containing Hughes’ body to the forest on July 24, 2024.
This evidence helped authorities build a strong case against him.
Community Raises Funds for Hughes’ Daughters
After the tragedy, members of the community started a GoFundMe campaign to help Hughes’ daughters during this difficult time.
The fundraiser aims to cover cremation expenses and create a lasting memorial in Hughes’ honour by planting a tree.
The remaining funds will support the girls’ education and school needs so they can continue their studies despite the difficult circumstances.
Supporters say the goal is to provide stability and help the daughters rebuild their lives after losing their mother.
