A shocking discovery in Massachusetts has left a local community disturbed after teenagers playing near a frozen pond found human body parts in the water. What began as a normal winter afternoon quickly turned into a horrifying scene that led to a police investigation into a suspected homicide. Authorities have now identified the victim and confirmed that the case involves a violent death.
Teenagers Discover Human Body Part in Pond
The incident happened on March 4 near Phoenix Pond in Shirley, Massachusetts. A group of teenagers had been playing in the snow near a bridge when they noticed something unusual in the water.
At first, they believed the object might be something else. But after taking a closer look, they realised it appeared to be a human body part.
The teens immediately reacted with shock and distress.
One witness, Katy Marsh, who was walking her dog nearby, said she saw the teenagers becoming physically sick after the discovery.
According to her, the teens were “dry heaving into the snowbank” and repeatedly saying how disturbing the situation was.
Marsh also recalled hearing someone identify the object as a human leg and foot.
Teen Witness Shares His Experience
One of the teenagers who made the discovery, 15-year-old Dominic Dunn, later spoke about the frightening experience.
He explained that the moment was especially disturbing because he had been playing in the snow with his younger sister just moments earlier.
According to Dunn, the discovery completely changed the mood of what had been a fun winter activity.
He said finding a human leg in the pond was something he never expected to experience.
Police Confirm Human Remains
The Shirley Police Department quickly responded to the scene after receiving reports about the discovery.
On the same day, officials confirmed that the object found in the pond was indeed a human limb.
Authorities secured the area and began searching the pond more thoroughly.
A police dive team was later brought in to assist with the investigation and to recover additional evidence from the water.
More Body Parts Recovered from Phoenix Pond
During a press conference the following day, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan provided more details about the case.
According to investigators, the dive team recovered several additional body parts from Phoenix Pond.
Ryan stated that although authorities were able to recover multiple remains, they did not find an entire body.
However, investigators confirmed that all the body parts discovered belonged to the same person.
Victim Identified as Peter Degan
Officials identified the victim as 69-year-old Peter Degan.
Authorities were able to confirm his identity using fingerprints from the recovered remains.
Investigators also revealed that the body parts appeared to have been deliberately cut.
Ryan explained that the limbs were “clean cut” and likely severed using a sharp instrument.
This detail strongly suggests that Degan’s death was a homicide.
Background of the Victim
According to investigators, Degan had a criminal history and was a convicted felon.
In 2019, he pleaded guilty to charges related to money laundering and cocaine trafficking.
After completing his prison sentence, he had recently been released from MCI-Shirley, a medium-security prison in Massachusetts.
At the time of his death, Degan was living in a pre-release housing program designed to help former inmates transition back into society.
Authorities said he had been released from prison on February 6.
The last confirmed sighting of Degan was on February 27.
Investigators Believe Killing Was Not Random
Law enforcement officials have stated that they do not believe Degan’s death was a random act of violence.
However, investigators have not yet revealed details about possible suspects or motives.
The investigation is still ongoing as authorities continue gathering evidence and speaking with potential witnesses.
Police are also reviewing surveillance footage and other information that might help explain what happened.
Police Ask Public for Information
Officials are asking members of the public to come forward if they have any information that could help solve the case.
Shirley Police Chief Samuel Santiago said anyone with relevant details should contact the Shirley Police Department.
Investigators hope that community tips could help them identify the person responsible for Degan’s death.
