A Texas court has sentenced a mother to life in prison after she was convicted of murdering her 17-month-old daughter in a shocking and heartbreaking case that stunned the Galveston community. Prosecutors said the woman stabbed her toddler a day before throwing the child from the top floor of a hotel balcony, causing fatal injuries.
Texas Mother Sentenced to Life for Daughter’s Murder
Channel Jasmine Yonko, 31, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of her 17-month-old daughter, Hannah Yonko.
The conviction came after a week-long trial in Galveston, Texas. Following the verdict, the court sentenced Yonko to life in prison.
Prosecutors described the case as a deeply disturbing crime involving a child who should have been protected by the person closest to her.
Baby Found Critically Injured Outside Hotel
The tragic incident happened on the morning of October 23, 2024.
Around 9:45 a.m., officers from the Galveston Police Department responded to an emergency call at the Beachfront Palms Hotel.
When officers arrived, they found the toddler lying in the street outside the hotel.
The child was still alive but suffering from severe injuries, including:
- A serious head wound
- Multiple stab wounds to the back
Emergency responders quickly transported Hannah to a nearby trauma centre.
Despite doctors’ efforts to save her, the toddler died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Mother Found Nearby After Incident
After the child was discovered, police began searching for the mother.
An officer located Yonko about half a mile away from the hotel.
According to police reports, she appeared distressed and asked the officer for help.
During the encounter, she reportedly spoke about her daughter and suggested the child might be sick.
Officers then took Yonko to the police station for questioning.
Evidence Showed Earlier Stabbing
During the trial, prosecutors revealed that the violence had actually started a day earlier.
Evidence presented in court showed that Yonko stabbed her daughter three times in the back the day before the fatal incident.
One of the stab wounds reportedly fractured the toddler’s rib.
Despite the injuries, the child survived the attack at that time.
Events Leading Up to the Hotel Tragedy
Prosecutors explained that Yonko had travelled to Galveston with her sister, her sister’s fiancé, and the toddler.
The group was initially staying at a condo.
After an argument with the fiancé, Yonko and her sister checked into the Beachfront Palms Hotel.
Jurors were shown surveillance footage from the hotel showing Yonko pushing her daughter in a stroller through the hallways.
Eventually, she took the child to the hotel’s top floor.
According to prosecutors, Yonko then threw the toddler over the balcony.
The fall sent the child four stories down onto the street below.
Mother Claimed Child Was ‘Possessed’
During the investigation, Yonko later spoke with a psychologist.
According to court testimony, she claimed she believed her daughter was possessed by demons.
She reportedly said she wanted to “send her to heaven” to free her from suffering.
Her defense team argued that she was legally insane at the time of the crime and did not understand right from wrong.
Prosecutors Disputed Insanity Claim
Prosecutors challenged the defense argument during the trial.
They pointed to evidence suggesting Yonko attempted to escape after the incident.
Investigators said she ordered an Uber following the crime and tried to dispose of evidence.
According to prosecutors, these actions suggested she knew what she had done and attempted to avoid being caught.
In closing arguments, prosecutors said Yonko was the one person who should have loved and protected Hannah unconditionally.
Instead, they said, she took the child’s life.
Evidence Found During Investigation
Detectives later discovered items connected to the crime in a trash bin outside the hotel.
Investigators found:
- A key card for hotel room 217
- A black-handled “skinning” knife
- A bag containing toys, snacks, and diapers
Authorities said the trio had been staying in that hotel room.
These items became part of the evidence presented during the trial.
Community Reacts to Heartbreaking Case
Local officials described the case as one of the most disturbing crimes they had seen.
Galveston Police Chief Doug Balli said every child deserves to feel safe, especially with their own parent.
The case deeply affected the community and investigators who worked on the investigation.
Many residents expressed grief over the tragic loss of such a young life.
