Airport travelers across the United States faced long security lines Sunday as a shortage of federal security workers slowed screening operations. The delays are linked to the ongoing partial government shutdown, which has left many airport security employees working without full pay.
TSA Worker Shortage Causes Long Airport Security Lines
Thousands of travelers experienced significant delays at airport security checkpoints due to staffing shortages at the Transportation Security Administration.
The issue is tied to the partial federal government shutdown affecting the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees TSA operations.
Because of the shutdown, many TSA officers have missed full paychecks, leading to absences and reduced staffing levels at airports.
Officials said the shortages created long lines at security checkpoints across the country.
Travelers Wait Up to Three Hours at Security
At several major airports, passengers reported waiting as long as three hours to pass through security screening.
Some travelers shared photos and videos online showing large crowds and lines stretching far outside terminals.
In one video posted by Aubry Killion, passengers were seen waiting in a security line that extended into a parking garage.
Travelers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport also experienced long delays, with wait times reaching about an hour.
Airport officials said the congestion was partly caused by increased passenger traffic and reduced TSA staffing.
Houston Airports Warn Travelers of Long Waits
Airports in Houston also warned travelers about extended screening times.
Officials operating William P. Hobby Airport said wait times could exceed 180 minutes during peak periods.
Passengers flying from Hobby Airport were advised to arrive four to five hours before their flights to allow enough time for security screening.
At George Bush Intercontinental Airport, travelers were also urged to plan ahead and expect longer lines.
Officials warned that TSA PreCheck lanes could be temporarily unavailable because of staffing shortages.
New Orleans Airport Also Affected
The impact of the shutdown was also felt at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.
Airport officials advised travelers to arrive at least three hours early for their scheduled departures.
Authorities said the shortage of TSA workers was causing longer-than-normal wait times at security checkpoints.
Shutdown Leaves TSA Agents Without Full Pay
TSA officers are federal employees and are directly affected by government funding lapses.
According to DHS officials, many agents recently received only partial paychecks and are now missing full pay periods entirely.
These financial pressures have contributed to worker absences, worsening staffing shortages at airports nationwide.
A similar situation occurred during a previous 43-day government shutdown, when TSA workers went weeks without pay.
Political Dispute Behind Shutdown
The shutdown began after the United States Congress failed to pass funding legislation for the Department of Homeland Security.
Lawmakers have been unable to agree on budget terms, partly due to disagreements over immigration enforcement policies.
Until a funding deal is reached, federal agencies such as TSA may continue to face operational challenges.
