A tragic incident in Utah ended with a deadly stabbing between two neighbours after a night of heavy drinking. The case has now reached its conclusion in court, where a 57-year-old man admitted responsibility for the death of his neighbour. Utah Man Pleads Guilty in Neighbour’s Death
Gerald Vandermeer, 57, has pleaded guilty to homicide by assault in the fatal stabbing of his neighbour, 45-year-old Cory Whittenburg.
The case originally began as a first-degree murder charge. However, the charge was later reduced after Vandermeer agreed to a plea deal and admitted responsibility for the killing.
The incident happened in Cedar City, Utah, on February 12, 2025. According to reports presented in court, both men were neighbours who spent the evening drinking together before the situation turned violent.
Night of Drinking Led to Deadly Fight
Court records revealed that Vandermeer went to Whittenburg’s home carrying alcohol, including a bottle of vodka and a case of beer.
During the sentencing hearing held on March 4, Vandermeer’s defence lawyer also stated that both men had used THC that night along with alcohol.
At some point during the evening, the two neighbours got into an argument. The dispute quickly escalated into a violent fight.
Investigators later said Vandermeer told them he could not clearly remember what the argument was about.
Police Found Victim with Multiple Stab Wounds
Police were called to the scene after receiving reports of a stabbing and a gunshot.
When officers arrived, they first encountered Vandermeer outside the home. According to authorities, he had several cuts and injuries on his face and hands.
Inside the house, officers found Cory Whittenburg already dead.
The medical examination revealed that Whittenburg suffered multiple stab wounds, including two serious stab injuries to his back.
The violent confrontation between the two neighbours ultimately resulted in Whittenburg’s death.
Defence Says Alcohol and Trauma Affected Judgment
During the sentencing hearing, Vandermeer’s defence attorney Richard Gale argued that his client was not thinking clearly during the incident.
According to Gale, Vandermeer was in a traumatised mental state after the fight. He said the situation involved both men using knives and that Vandermeer himself had also been injured.
The lawyer also explained that Vandermeer had suffered several stab wounds and even broke his ankle during the altercation.
Gale told the court that alcohol and THC likely affected Vandermeer’s ability to think clearly or make proper decisions after the fight.
One issue raised during the hearing was that Vandermeer did not immediately call for help after Whittenburg was injured.
Prosecutor Criticises Delay in Calling for Help
Prosecutor Shane Klenk reminded the court that the case involved the loss of a human life.
He told the court that Whittenburg died because of the violent encounter with Vandermeer.
The prosecutor also pointed out that Vandermeer left the victim alone instead of calling emergency services or seeking help.
This delay in getting medical assistance was considered an important factor during sentencing.
Court Announces Prison Sentence
After reviewing the case, the court sentenced Vandermeer to up to five years in prison.
He will receive credit for the time he has already served while awaiting trial.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered Vandermeer to pay restitution of $5,800 plus interest. This payment will go toward funeral costs and other related expenses.
