A tragic incident in New Orleans has led to serious criminal charges after a police chase ended in a devastating crash that caused the death of an unborn child.
Authorities say the driver of a stolen car refused to stop for police and crashed into a bridge pillar, leaving several people seriously injured. The case has drawn attention due to the loss of the unborn baby and the serious charges now facing the driver.
Police Chase in New Orleans Ends in Serious Crash
The incident happened on Saturday night in New Orleans.
According to Louisiana State Police, troopers were patrolling near Elysian Fields Avenue and North Claiborne Avenue shortly after 9 p.m. when they noticed a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro committing traffic violations.
Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle by activating their emergency lights and sirens.
However, authorities say the driver refused to stop and instead sped away, beginning a police chase.
During the pursuit, police say the vehicle ran through several traffic lights and continued driving at a very high speed through city streets.
Stolen Car Crashes Into Bridge Support
State police eventually lost sight of the Camaro during the chase.
A short time later, troopers found the car badly crashed on North Broad Street.
Investigators said the driver failed to navigate a left curve in the road.
The car then:
- Left the roadway
- Struck a downed telephone pole
- Crashed head-on into a concrete bridge support pillar
The crash caused severe damage to the vehicle and seriously injured the passengers.
Driver Arrested After Crash
Police identified the driver as 26-year-old Caleb Ezidore from New Orleans.
Authorities said he suffered only minor injuries in the crash and was taken into custody.
Two passengers inside the vehicle were more seriously hurt. Police reported that both the front-seat and rear-seat passengers were partially ejected from the car during the collision.
All three people in the vehicle were transported to a hospital for treatment.
Unborn Child Dies After Crash
During the investigation, authorities learned that the passenger sitting in the back seat was pregnant.
Doctors attempted life-saving measures to deliver the baby after the crash.
Unfortunately, the unborn child did not survive.
Because of the death of the unborn baby, investigators later filed additional charges against the driver.
Vehicle Was Reported Stolen
Police also discovered that the Chevrolet Camaro involved in the crash had been reported stolen.
According to investigators, the vehicle had been taken from New Orleans in December of the previous year.
Authorities further revealed that the same vehicle had previously fled from law enforcement during another police chase on February 14.
This information became part of the ongoing investigation.
Driver Faces Multiple Charges
After completing their investigation, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Ezidore.
Once he was released from the hospital, he was booked into the Orleans Justice Center.
He is now facing several charges, including:
| Charge | Description |
|---|---|
| Second-degree feticide | Related to the death of the unborn child |
| Aggravated flight from an officer | For fleeing from police during the chase |
| Traffic-related offenses | Multiple violations connected to the pursuit |
Authorities said additional details could emerge as the investigation continues.
