A disturbing child case from Florida has ended with a long prison sentence for a mother who failed to protect her young son from brutal torture inside their home.
Investigators revealed shocking details about how the 5-year-old boy was repeatedly beaten, restrained for hours, and even placed inside a dog cage while his mother was present. The case has deeply shocked the community and raised serious concerns about child safety and parental responsibility.
Florida Mother Sentenced to 60 Years in Child Abuse Case
A 30-year-old Florida woman, Taylor Schaefer, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison after pleading no contest to several serious charges related to the abuse of her young son.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Schaefer pleaded no contest to multiple charges, including:
- Conspiracy to commit child neglect causing great bodily harm
The charges stem from her role in allowing her boyfriend, Shawn M. Stone, to repeatedly abuse her 5-year-old son inside their home.
A judge ordered Schaefer to serve 60 years behind bars for her involvement in the horrific abuse.
Abuse Discovered Through Home Surveillance
The investigation began in May 2023 when Schaefer told police she had a “gut feeling” that her live-in boyfriend was hurting her son.
She checked the home’s surveillance footage and saw disturbing scenes that confirmed her suspicions. After watching the videos, she contacted the police.
However, investigators later discovered that Schaefer had not told the full story.
Authorities said that although she eventually reported the abuse, she had been present in the house during many of the incidents and failed to stop the violence or seek help earlier.
Child Allegedly Bound and Locked in Dog Cage
Investigators said the surveillance footage revealed shocking details of the abuse the child suffered.
According to deputies, the boy was:
- Repeatedly beaten by Stone
- Left with his hands tied behind his back for hours
- Locked inside a dog cage
- Denied food as punishment
On several occasions, the child was clearly injured and limping, yet he was not taken for medical treatment.
Officials said the boy was often restrained for long periods.
For example, in one incident recorded on video, his hands were tied behind his back at 6:43 p.m. and remained bound until the next afternoon at 2:02 p.m.
In another incident, investigators said his arms, legs, torso, and feet were tied together while Stone stood over him.
Violence Captured on Video
Authorities said the home surveillance system captured multiple moments of violent abuse.
The footage reportedly showed Stone yelling at the already injured boy while kicking him.
In some clips, Schaefer appeared in the video but did not intervene to stop the abuse.
Instead, investigators said she told the child to stand up straight while the abuse continued.
Deputies noted that the sounds of the violent attacks could be heard throughout the house.
Severe Injuries Suffered by the Child
Doctors later examined the boy and found extensive injuries.
Medical reports showed that the child had suffered:
- At least 46 visible injuries
- Severe bruising and physical trauma
- Internal injuries
- A fractured skull
Authorities said the level of violence the child endured was extremely serious and life-threatening.
Other Children Also Victims
Investigators said the abuse did not stop with just one child.
Two other children living in the home were also victims of abuse and neglect.
Authorities reported that:
- One child was forced to drink boiling hot water.
- The same child was sprayed with boiling water and beaten with household items.
- Another child living in the home did not receive proper nutrition or medical care for a serious condition.
The children also witnessed the violent abuse happening inside the house.
Officials said the trauma from seeing such abuse can have long-lasting psychological effects.
Boyfriend Faces Separate Charges
Schaefer’s boyfriend, Shawn M. Stone, faces multiple charges including:
- Aggravated child abuse
- False imprisonment
- Child neglect causing great bodily harm
He was arrested on May 9, 2023.
Authorities say Stone allegedly beat the boy with a mop handle and also punched and kicked him before fleeing from police on a four-wheeler.
He is currently being held in the Volusia County Jail without bond while his case continues.
Children Now in Safe Care
Following the investigation, all the children were removed from the home and placed in a safe environment.
Officials say the children are now receiving protection and care away from the abusive situation.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood spoke about the case and expressed anger over what the children endured.
He described the abuse as extremely difficult to imagine and said those responsible must face justice.
The sheriff also shared information about a fundraiser created to help support the children’s recovery.
