A disturbing child case from Minnesota has shocked the community after authorities revealed details of severe torture involving a young girl. Prosecutors described the abuse as one of the worst cases they have ever seen in the state. The case came to light after school officials noticed injuries on the child and reported them to authorities, leading to a major police investigation.
Minnesota Stepmother Sentenced to Prison in Shocking Child Torture Case
A 25-year-old Minnesota woman, Vivian Rose Wahlstrom, has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to torturing her elementary school-aged stepdaughter.
The sentence was handed down in Minnesota after she admitted to the charge of torture of a child. According to prosecutors, she will serve 57 months in prison, which is about 4 years and 9 months. She has already received credit for 433 days she spent in custody before the sentencing.
Meanwhile, her husband, Jaymeson Patrick Wahlstrom, who is the child’s father, is also facing the same child torture charge. His next court hearing is scheduled for March 23.
School Bruise Alert Started the Investigation
The case began in October 2024 when authorities from the Grand Rapids Police Department received a report from the child’s school.
Teachers noticed a large black and yellow bruise on the girl’s upper arm and became concerned. Police officers later interviewed the child, who said her father caused the injury.
Doctors who examined the girl discovered at least 20 bruises across different parts of her body, including:
- Arms
- Mouth
- Ribs
- Back
- Thighs
- Shoulders
- Face
- Ears
These injuries raised serious concerns about long-term abuse.
Police Found Disturbing Conditions in the Home
When officers visited the family home, they reported extremely poor living conditions.
According to investigators, the child’s bedroom contained:
- A urine-stained mattress placed directly on the floor
- Only one blanket
- Dirty dishes with moldy food nearby
- A television in the room
Other parts of the house allegedly had dog feces, urine, dirty clothing, and garbage scattered around.
Authorities said the living environment showed clear signs of neglect.
Abuse Captured on In-Home Camera
Investigators later discovered that much of the abuse had been recorded on a camera installed inside the girl’s bedroom.
According to the affidavit, the footage showed the child spending long periods alone in her room every day.
Police said the parents reportedly forced the girl to lie in a strict position called “lie right”, where she had to stay on her back with her hands at her sides. If she moved, they would shout at her to return to that position.
The child was often ordered to stay in her room all day and was only allowed to leave to use the bathroom.
Authorities also said the girl had very few belongings and sometimes played with an empty McDonald’s Happy Meal box because she had no toys.
Violent Beatings Described by Investigators
Police said the father admitted that he had once “lost it” during an argument involving the child.
Investigators reviewed footage showing a violent attack where the girl was allegedly:
- Punched
- Slapped
- Kicked
- Slammed against a wall
According to police, the beating lasted most of the day and involved nearly 100 hits.
Authorities also said the stepmother encouraged the violence during the incident.
Prosecutors Call Case One of the Worst in Minnesota
The case is being handled by the Itasca County Attorney’s Office.
County Attorney Jake Fauchald described the crimes as extremely disturbing.
He said the video evidence showed repeated violent assaults against the child and called the abuse “barbaric.”
Prosecutors also said the case ranks among the most shocking child incidents ever seen in Minnesota.
Child protective services have since taken custody of all three children in the household.
