A troubling incident in Florida has drawn attention after a young boy approached police officers and told them he had been left alone at home. Authorities say the child’s mother had gone out and did not leave anyone to watch him. The situation led to an investigation by police and child welfare officials, and the mother now faces criminal charges.
Florida Woman Arrested After 5-Year-Old Son Flags Down Police for Help
A 23-year-old Florida woman, Britley Louis, was arrested after police said she left her 5-year-old son alone at home while she went to the store.
According to the North Miami Beach Police Department, the child approached officers and told them his mother had gone to Walmart and had not said when she would return.
The incident reportedly happened the night before Louis was arrested on March 8. Authorities later charged her with child neglect and unlawful desertion of a child.
Child Approached Officers and Asked for Help
Police body camera footage showed the young boy walking up to officers and explaining that he was alone.
When officers asked where his mother was, the child reportedly told them she had gone to Walmart. He also said she did not tell him when she would come back.
When another officer asked if he lived nearby, the boy replied that he lived there “by myself” because his mother had left him.
According to police, the child was outside wearing a long-sleeved shirt but no pants or shoes.
Police Found Poor Living Conditions Inside the Home
Officers followed the child to the house he pointed out as his home. When they knocked on the door, no one answered.
Police later entered the residence through an open door and said they found extremely poor living conditions.
According to the arrest affidavit, the home showed signs of hoarding and unsanitary conditions, including:
- Rotten food residue in different areas
- Spiderwebs throughout the house
- A strong, unpleasant smell coming from the refrigerator
- General dirt and clutter inside the home
Authorities said the conditions raised serious concerns about the child’s safety.
Mother Failed to Respond to Investigators
Investigators eventually identified the boy’s mother as Britley Louis. Police said she did not answer multiple calls from officers during the investigation.
According to the affidavit, Louis later told an agent with the Florida Department of Children and Families that a friend would pick up the child.
However, the friend reportedly told authorities she was not comfortable taking custody of the boy.
As a result, child welfare officials placed the child under the care of the Department of Children and Families.
Mother Arrested and Ordered to Stay Away from Child
Police arrested Louis the next day as she was leaving her home.
After her arrest, she was charged with child neglect and unlawful desertion of a child.
Louis was later released from jail but was ordered by the court not to have contact with her son.
Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 7.
