Sen. John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, stirred controversy on Wednesday when he discussed the leadership of his party and expressed concerns about the current political climate. Speaking on the “All-In” podcast, Fetterman claimed that Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) is now the dominant force within the Democratic Party.
Fetterman on the Lack of Democratic Leadership
When asked about the leader of the Democratic Party, Fetterman bluntly replied, “Oh, we don’t have one.” He explained that the party is currently governed by TDS, and he believes this has made it “impossible” for Democrats to acknowledge anything positive that comes from the opposing side, particularly under former President Donald Trump.
Fetterman’s Criticism of Party’s Reaction to Trump’s Actions
Fetterman pointed to the Democratic Party’s refusal to celebrate President Donald Trump’s military strikes in Iran as an example of how the party’s focus on opposing Trump often prevents them from recognizing good actions. He questioned why Democrats didn’t acknowledge that Trump’s actions were in line with their own stance on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
“And what’s strange to me, that every single Democrat that’s run for president and anyone that I know in Congress says we must never allow them to acquire a nuclear bomb. When that happens, why not celebrate that or acknowledge that?” Fetterman said.
Fetterman Praises Trump’s Decision on Iran
Despite his party’s refusal to support Trump’s actions, Fetterman himself praised the military strikes as a “historic” moment for America.
He argued that Democrats should have celebrated the achievement instead of criticizing it simply because it came from the Republican Party. “I have only witnessed just criticism…when a good thing happens just because it comes from the different party, that tells me you’re choosing party loyalty over country,” he added.
Fetterman Criticizes Inflexibility in His Party
Throughout the podcast, Fetterman continued to criticize his own party, calling them “inflexible” and unwilling to compromise.
He shared his concerns about the Democratic Party’s stance on issues such as support for Israel. “What I’ve discovered is that you are not allowed to be unapologetically standing with Israel, but it’s okay if you have a Nazi tattoo on your chest,” Fetterman said, referring to some members of his party who, in his view, were attempting to normalize extreme views.
Calls for More Bipartisanship
Fetterman’s comments highlight his frustration with the current state of the Democratic Party, where he believes ideological purity has taken precedence over practical solutions and bipartisanship. His remarks on Israel and compromise reflect growing tensions within the party as it faces an increasingly polarized political landscape.
