Democratic Senator John Fetterman has praised Elon Musk for his generous offer to pay the salaries of TSA employees, who have gone unpaid due to the ongoing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown.
Fetterman, who has been vocal about his support for ending the shutdown, called Musk’s gesture “incredibly generous” and noted that many TSA agents across the country are relying on food pantries and community donations just to get by.
Fetterman’s Support for DHS Funding
In a social media post, Fetterman reaffirmed his position, stating, “I remain the lone Dem to vote with my Republican colleagues to fully fund DHS and get people paid. It should never come to this point.” Fetterman’s stance has placed him at odds with some of his fellow Democrats, especially regarding the ongoing shutdown and its effects on federal workers like TSA agents.
Ongoing Shutdown and Republican Proposal
The shutdown continues to affect various agencies under the DHS, and Senate Republicans recently proposed changes to the department in an effort to move forward with funding.
According to Senator John Hoeven, Republicans suggested adding body cameras for TSA agents, increasing training, and limiting arrests in sensitive areas like churches, hospitals, and schools. Hoeven emphasized that Democrats need to return to the negotiating table to discuss what they are willing to compromise on.
Despite these efforts, the Senate failed again to advance a bill that would fund the DHS for the full year. Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote in favor of this measure, highlighting his willingness to work across party lines.
Fetterman’s Controversial Votes
Fetterman’s support for the DHS funding bill has put him at odds with other Democrats. His vote to advance the nomination of Markwayne Mullin for the role of Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security was another controversial decision. Mullin’s nomination was approved by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee by a narrow 8-7 vote, with Republican Senator Rand Paul voting against it.
Fetterman’s actions have led to calls from some within his party for his removal. Representative Brendan Boyle, a fellow Pennsylvania Democrat, criticized Fetterman for being aligned with President Donald Trump’s policies and suggested that Fetterman should be removed in the next election. This marks the first time Boyle has openly called for Fetterman’s ouster, despite having criticized him before.
Pressure from Other Democrats
Other Pennsylvania Democrats have also voiced opposition to Fetterman’s actions. Representative Chrissy Houlahan, who represents the same state, encouraged her constituents to contact Fetterman’s office and urge him to oppose Mullin’s nomination.
At a recent town hall, Houlahan remarked that Fetterman’s tendency to work with Republicans on certain issues, particularly DHS funding, has led to increasing dissatisfaction among his Democratic peers.
