A Venezuelan migrant accused of murdering a college student in Chicago did not appear in court Monday because he is in hospital being treated for tuberculosis (TB), a rare but contagious infection in the United States.
The suspect, 25‑year‑old Jose Medina‑Medina, was supposed to attend a detention hearing, but doctors say he needs ongoing treatment for TB at a local hospital.
Medina‑Medina has been charged with first‑degree murder, attempted murder and weapons offences in the death of 18‑year‑old Sheridan Gorman, a freshman at Loyola University Chicago.
What Happened to the Student?
Sheridan Gorman, from New York, was walking near campus around 1:30 a.m. last Thursday with a group of friends, hoping to see the northern lights. While they walked, Medina‑Medina allegedly came from hiding with a gun.
When the students tried to flee, prosecutors say Medina‑Medina fired once, and the bullet struck Gorman in the head, killing her instantly.
Suspect’s Background and Prior Arrests
According to U.S. authorities, Medina‑Medina is an undocumented Venezuelan national who entered the U.S. illegally in 2023.
After entering, he was released by federal border officials and later arrested in Chicago for shoplifting, but was freed again due to local sanctuary city policies.
Surveillance camera footage and his own mother’s identification helped police find and arrest him quickly after the shooting.
Current Court Status
Because Medina‑Medina is currently in hospital, the pretrial detention hearing has been postponed. Officials say he will stay in custody even while receiving medical care.
It is not yet clear when he will next appear in court.
