Darlington County, SC – A man has been arrested after his father’s body was found dismembered in a barrel at their home. The discovery led to multiple charges, including desecration of a body and obstruction of justice.
The Discovery of Judson Hawkins Jr.’s Body
On March 18, 2024, deputies from the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office and officials from the Darlington County Coroner’s Office responded to a report of a death at a residence.
Inside the garage, they found the body of 82-year-old Judson Hawkins Jr., dismembered and stored in a 55-gallon drum. Authorities then arrested his son, Judson Hawkins III, who is facing charges related to the desecration of human remains.
Charges and Investigation Details
Hawkins III has been charged with desecration of human remains, obstruction of justice, and providing false information to authorities in an attempt to hinder a missing persons investigation. Authorities report that Hawkins III allegedly moved his father’s body from the house to another location on the property and gave authorities misleading information.
The Darlington County Coroner, Todd Hardee, confirmed that Hawkins Jr. had been dead for some time, though the exact cause and manner of death have not yet been determined. Hardee also stated that he does not believe Hawkins Jr. was killed by another person.
Community Reaction
According to Hans Schneider, an area restaurant owner, Hawkins Jr. was a regular customer at his establishment. Schneider described him as a quiet but cordial person who brought a sense of festivity to the restaurant. “We really enjoyed seeing him,” Schneider said.
Court Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
A magistrate has denied bond for Hawkins III, and he will remain in custody until his next scheduled court appearance on June 3, 2024. The investigation into Hawkins Jr.’s death is still ongoing, and authorities are continuing to gather information.
