Acts of kindness in uniform often go unnoticed, but sometimes they shine so brightly that they inspire an entire community. In Louisiana, two deputies were recently honoured for going beyond their duty and showing true compassion in a simple yet powerful way.
Officers Honoured for Their Kindness
Two members of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office — Todd Prevost and Wendy Plaisance — were recognised with the Heart of Law Enforcement Award.
The award was presented by Beyond the Badge during a ceremony held in Baton Rouge on March 17, 2026. In total, 13 officers from across the state were honoured at the event.
A Simple Act That Made a Big Difference
The recognition came from a touching incident involving an elderly man named Charlie.
Deputy Wendy Plaisance first met him walking barefoot, pushing a bicycle with a flat tyre and carrying bags. He told her he was trying to return to Florida.
Understanding how difficult that journey would be, she took him to a nearby store and bought him shoes and socks so he could travel more comfortably.
Going One Step Further
Later that same day, Sergeant Todd Prevost came across the same man—without knowing what had already been done.
After learning about Charlie’s plan, Prevost realised that travelling across states on a bicycle was not safe or practical. So, he made a decision that changed everything—he bought Charlie a bus ticket so he could reach home safely.
Recognition Beyond Duty
Officials praised both officers for their actions. Sheriff Craig Webre said their efforts truly reflect the department’s mission of serving the public in every possible way.
These acts were not part of their official duty, but they showed genuine care and humanity.
About the Award
The Heart of Law Enforcement Award is given to officers who perform acts of kindness beyond their normal responsibilities.
The organisation was founded by Linda Hull to highlight positive stories in law enforcement. It aims to remind people that many officers quietly help others in meaningful ways every day.
Why Stories Like This Matter
In today’s time, where negative news often dominates, such stories help restore faith and balance the narrative.
They show that:
Community trust grows when people see genuine care
Small acts of kindness can have a big impact
Compassion is just as important as enforcement
