Nearly one hundred million dollars worth of cocaine discovered hidden in bananas

Published On:

In a shocking case in the United Kingdom, three individuals have been charged for allegedly attempting to smuggle nearly $100 million worth of cocaine in a shipment of bananas. This incident marks another case of illegal drugs being hidden inside containers of the tropical fruit.

Details of the Incident

Joshua Berry (28), Daniel Dumitru (37), and Andrew Smyth (46) were arrested in Southampton, England, and have been charged by the National Crime Agency (NCA). They are set to appear in court on April 17. Berry was the last person to be charged and appeared in court for the first time on Friday. Dumitru and Smyth were arrested nearly two weeks earlier.

Their arrest is part of the NCA’s investigation into a massive cocaine haul seized earlier this month. Border agency officers found over 2,000 pounds (about 1 ton) of cocaine inside a shipping container full of bananas at Southampton Docks.

The shipment had arrived from Panama, but originally set sail from Nicaragua. The street value of the seized drugs is approximately 75 million British pounds (around $98.9 million).

What’s at Stake for the Accused?

If convicted, the three men could face life imprisonment under UK sentencing laws. The authorities are determined to stop these drugs from reaching the streets and depriving criminals of massive profits.

The Cocaine Banana Trend

This incident is not the first time cocaine has been discovered in a shipment of bananas. Around the world, similar cases have been reported recently in countries like Russia, Norway, Greece, Bulgaria, and the Dominican Republic.

In February 2024, British authorities seized more than 12,500 pounds of cocaine hidden in bananas at Southampton Docks, which was the country’s largest single drug seizure ever recorded.
