An 83-year-old Air Force veteran, Richard Williams, has died after being pushed onto subway tracks in Manhattan. Prosecutors have charged Bairon Hernandez with murder and assault in connection with the incident.
What Happened
According to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, the attack occurred on March 8 at the Lexington Avenue–63rd Street station. Williams, who was walking with a cane, was allegedly pushed from behind onto the tracks. He suffered a severe brain injury, never regained consciousness, and died on March 17.
Multiple Victims
Prosecutors say Hernandez also pushed another man, a 30-year-old, onto the tracks in a separate, unprovoked incident shortly before attacking Williams. The younger victim survived with a shoulder injury.
Charges and Background
Hernandez has been indicted on charges including second-degree murder, attempted first-degree assault, and second-degree assault. Reports indicate he had a history of prior arrests and had previously been deported multiple times before the incident.
