A Florida man, David Richard Morris, has been charged with second-degree murder after allegedly shooting his downstairs neighbor, Jeffrey Blevins, outside an apartment complex in Bartow.
What Happened
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place Thursday night at Fountain Place Apartments. Blevins, 56, was outside smoking a cigarette and speaking with his mother on the phone when he was suddenly shot.
His mother reportedly heard a noise during the call and tried to reach him again, but he did not respond. She then contacted his sister, who found him outside. Authorities say he had been shot in the forehead and died at the scene.
Investigation and Evidence
Sheriff Grady Judd said investigators identified Morris, 48, as a suspect after speaking with neighbors. Morris admitted to owning a 9mm handgun, and detectives had already recovered a matching shell casing at the scene.
During a search of his home, authorities say they found a firearm with similar markings, along with alleged blood evidence on the weapon, shoes, and a towel. Investigators also reported that Morris had previous conflicts with neighbors, including an incident involving Blevins the night before the shooting.
Additional Details
Witnesses described Morris as behaving strangely at times, and investigators said he had a history of drug use. During the search, he allegedly interfered with officers, leading to additional charges, including resisting and possession of stolen street signs.
Legal Status
Morris has been charged with second-degree murder and discharging a firearm in a residential area. He was ordered held without bond during his first court appearance.
What It Means
Authorities say the victim was well-liked and non-confrontational, making the incident particularly shocking for the community. The investigation is ongoing as officials continue to gather evidence.
