A man in Arizona has been charged with attempted murder after police say he violently attacked a woman following a minor car accident.
What Happened
Authorities say Joseph Sellers, 30, pulled over with the victim after a minor crash near a Burger King in Mesa. The two had stopped to exchange information when, according to police, Sellers suddenly attacked the woman without provocation.
Details of the Attack
Investigators say Sellers punched and stabbed the victim multiple times, leaving her with severe injuries, including a collapsed lung and numerous stab wounds to her face, neck, and torso. Police described the victim as “brutally beaten” and bleeding heavily when they arrived.
According to court documents, Sellers allegedly told police he became angry after the crash and believed he was being “gang stalked.” He admitted he intended to harm the victim and later took her phone.
How the Victim Got Help
Despite her injuries, the victim was able to call for help using a smartwatch after realizing her phone had been taken. Officers found her in the parking lot and rushed her to a hospital.
Arrest and Evidence
Police say Sellers fled Arizona after the attack but was later located in Las Vegas. He was found driving the same vehicle, which had been altered, and was allegedly in possession of the victim’s phone.
A search of his vehicle reportedly uncovered box cutters believed to match the weapon used in the attack.
Charges and Next Steps
Sellers has been extradited back to Arizona and is now facing charges including attempted second-degree murder, armed robbery, and burglary. He is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on April 2.
