A small business owner in Louisiana is raising serious concerns about dust pollution from a nearby sandpit, saying it is impacting his newly opened store and posing potential safety risks.

Keith LeBlanc recently opened Nannie’s Convenience Store along Highway 44 in St. James Parish after renovating an old bank building.
LeBlanc says he is proud to serve his hometown, especially since the area had gone years without a convenience store. He noted that the community had been without such a facility for years, making his business an important addition to the area.
Dust From Sandpit Causing Daily Issues
LeBlanc’s main concern is a sandpit located directly across the street, which he claims constantly generates dust due to heavy truck activity. Throughout the day, trucks move in and out of the site transporting sand, and depending on wind conditions, large amounts of dust are blown toward his store.
He says the dust is entering his shop and even coating his air conditioning unit, creating both cleanliness issues and potential maintenance problems.
Safety Risks on the Road
Beyond the inconvenience, LeBlanc believes the situation poses a real danger to drivers. He warned that the dust can reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions.
When it rains, the problem shifts from dust to mud, as the roadway becomes covered in a thick layer, making it slippery and unsafe for vehicles.
Companies Involved in the Sandpit
The sandpit has been operating in the area for decades and involves multiple companies. It is primarily owned by Zen-Noh Grain and leased to Fill Materials LLC, with operations handled by Rene’s Industries LLC.
Rene’s Industries has stated that it takes steps to manage the situation, including spraying water to control dust and cleaning the roadway. However, the company has also indicated that paving the levee road may not completely eliminate the issue.
Proposed Solution and Ongoing Frustration
LeBlanc believes that paving the levee driveway could significantly reduce the dust problem and improve conditions for both his business and passing traffic. He has expressed frustration that despite raising concerns, no permanent solution has yet been implemented.
He feels that after investing time and effort into building his business, the ongoing situation is unfair to both him and the surrounding community.

Although the sandpit operates within an industrial zone, LeBlanc plans to take his concerns to local officials. He intends to attend an upcoming parish council meeting to voice his complaints and push for action.
