A driver was arrested following a high-speed crash in Kenner early Sunday morning, according to the Kenner Police Department. The crash, which took place around 5:30 a.m., occurred near the intersection of Loyola Drive and Vintage Drive.
Incident Details
Police say Hector Escobar-Sevilla, the driver, ran a red light at a high rate of speed, struck a curb, and lost control of his vehicle before crashing into a fence along a nearby subdivision. Officers arrived to find the vehicle on its side, with Escobar-Sevilla trapped inside. The Kenner Fire Department responded promptly and extricated him from the wreckage.
The crash caused significant damage, including about 40 yards of fencing. Debris from the vehicle, including parts of the engine and tires, was scattered across the roadway and into a nearby canal.
Blood Alcohol Test and Legal Issues
Escobar-Sevilla was taken to the hospital, where a blood test revealed a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit. In addition to driving under the influence, Kenner police say he did not have a valid driver’s license and is in the country illegally.
He was booked on multiple charges, including Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle, DWI (Driving While Intoxicated), an attachment out of Westwego for traffic-related crimes, and an ICE Removal or Deportation Order.
Police Response and Chief’s Statement
Kenner Police Chief Conley expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing the dangers posed by Escobar-Sevilla’s actions. He thanked God that no innocent person was injured or killed in the crash and criticized the rhetoric surrounding illegal immigration. Chief Conley pointed out that this was a traffic incident that put the entire community at risk, highlighting the serious consequences of reckless driving.
“We will continue to work with our federal partners to ensure the safety of our community, even if it is just a traffic offense,” Chief Conley said.
Investigation and Community Impact
No other injuries were reported in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities examine the full scope of the incident.
